Courtois Is The Man!

As Diego Costa powered in a close range header in the 83rd minute of the Champions League knock-out phase, he only had one man to thank for the significance of his goal. Thibaut Courtois, our 21 year old goalkeeper who is currently on loan at Atletico Madrid, pulled off two marvellous saves from a Kaka shot and Poli header, keeping Atletico on terms with Milan.

So the question about next season rears its head once again. Courtois really does look like the finished article, a powerful keeper who is both confident and agile. Do you think we should bring him into the first team next season, at the expense of our long-time stalwart Petr Cech? Questions, questions, questions.

The rumours of Costa for Courtois are also rumbling quietly in the background and, after the game, the 25 year old striker had this to say about his Belgian team-mate.

'Courtois is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.'

'It was a very difficult game against a big team but we have been able to withstand the pressure and at the key moment we sought the result.'

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone refused to celebrate too much after the victory, knowing the calibre of players and coach Milan possess at the moment.

With no less than Clarence Seedorf set to visit, Simeone added: 'I am absolutely calm. We know that the Champions League is difficult.

'It is a good step but there's a lot left to play. The result has been good but it cannot be trusted upon with a team like Milan. You have to work to keep going.'

Imagine having both of them? That would be a sight for sore eyes but I can't see Atletico giving us both of them.

What do you guys think?

Up the Blues!

We would be MAD to sell him. I just hope Mourinho / Roman arent so short sighted as to want to make a short term gain by selling him , rather than the greater long term gain
Blue_Mel
No disrespect to Cech , but this guy is the business. If we are to compete with City , we MUST keep Courtois

Thank you for your services petr, courtios is the real deal
Ken4CFC
Well Jose will never bench cech for him. And the ways things stand, he will want to sell him. There is this thing about Jose I don't like, may be he is trying to sell all our youth and quality players and sign his own players just so people can say he bought the players by himself. Or what is he trying to prove? Abramovic and Emenalo must find a way to protect these players for the next 3 years so that if Jose leaves anytime we won't have to start all over.
Killerpass
@Killer..I dont want to bench Cech...my preference would be to sell him.
Blue_Mel
Both of them please.
blue5
In fact I think a great deal would be to use Cech in a swap deal for Costa ..and for us to keep Courtois
Blue_Mel
@Killer...Benching Cech would be to disrespect him. He needs to continue playing (for another club) He still has a substantial monetary value and in the days of FFP, we dont want to have him sat on the bench ) when we could use his value to obtain a player like Costa ( a striker we need) and to provide Atletico with a replacement for Courtois..- everyone's happy
Blue_Mel
Both would be nice! :)
syed230183_chelseafc
Nice - but realistic?
Blue_Mel
Atletico are officially a big contender in football nowadays. Kudos to simeone for the work he has done. if they happen to loose courtois and costa come summer it remains to know how they will cope or rather adapt
kolagold25
Mou has already witnessed the capabilities of courtois firsthand in his time in spain and while he is seeing what petr cech is still capable of presently i am of the believe he will be in the best position to make a proper judgement
kolagold25
This is why they would probably be keen to at least consider the deal where they get a (good) replacement for Courtois.
Blue_Mel
IMO cech champions league, FA cup and league cup, courtois (premier league)
Finney_angel
I'm afraid, but if Mata couldnt "sit" on the bench, then neither can Petr...... ands thats a FACT!!!

Tom you say "I can't see Atletico giving us both of them"? Well hang on, Courtois is our player so that's one sorted. Costa, well they won't give him to anyone, but sell him? Yes very likely as their financial problems are well documented, and I've no doubt that they'll push for some sort of deal that lets them keep Courtois. However I don't believe the club would sanction that, other strikers are available if push comes to shove. Killerpass, if your argument is correct, then Jose will also be flogging off Hazard & Oscar & would have long since sold Frank & Cech as none of them were signed by him. Do you seriously believe that Jose will do what is will make him look good rather than what is best for Chelsea? And if so, then by extension you must also believe that Roman & the board will stand back & let him? Or do you think that they are all idiots & wouldn't spot it? Sorry fellow Blue, but that is utter nonsense.

I believe that there is a viable solution to the problem.Cech has certainly a good 5 years of top class football ahead of himself and with his performances he doesn't deserve to be shown the door or even worse - benched.Petr is a blue legend and he deserves top class treatment by the club and with his ever-solid presence between the posts he is a huge asset to the team.I got a little bit side-tracked,so here is my main point : offer Courtois a massive contract extension and loan him back to Atletico for two or three more years. He obviously loves them and they need him,so it is a win-win situation.Meanwhile,if Atletico carry on with their solid performances in La Liga, our loanee keeper will be gaining experience in the title race in Spain as well as in the latter stages of the Champions league. If Courtois refuses to commit himself, use him in a Diego Costa swap deal, but certainly insist on a reasonable buy-back option. Thus if we feel we need to replace Cech at some point,Thibaut will be always available.Anything else done by Chelsea will be an utter madness and would be either unfair to our legendary player or simply unviable football-wise.
Simeon23
i disagree @simeon...no player is indispensible...legend or otherwise... in the days of FFP, costs have to be taken into account.. we hang on to Cech until he is knackered and possibly further injured..he will have no resale value. We need a striker .. lets get Costa and use Cech as bait for the deal as they will need a good GK to replace Courtois... lets use the young keeper rather than hang on to an ageing one who is already injured. Cech has value NOW , maybe not later
Blue_Mel
We have so many disposable players that FFP regulations are our least concern. We have players on loan which cost more than 100 Million combined,as well as some first team members who could be sold and Terry,Lampard and Cole with their massive wages with expiring contracts/.I am not saying that Cech is indispensible, but that he should be treated with the right amount of respect for everything he has given for the club. And as old as he is ,he will cost at least 5 Million Quids even on forty, provided he has more years on his contract.Plus I am not really convinced that Diego Costa is the type of striker we are looking for,I really think that Cavani would be much better investment. He would probably cost 20 million more, but he is pure class,he is unsettled in PSG because of coach's preference of Ibrakadabra and he is only one year older than Costa.
Simeon23
Cech is one of my favourites but I will pick Courtois as our #1 because he has AN EXTRA DECADE than Cech...
Chelsea n Torres Fan
First thing's first; Courtois is OUR player, Atleti have NO say in giving him back to us. As for Costa, he has a release clause and Atleti would have no say in the matter if we triggered it. Agree with splitting between the CL, COC, & FA to Pete and giving Courtois the BPL so he can adapt. Or perhaps, like a few said above use Cech + cash for Costa clause and recall TC. Trust Mou with any decision though.
ForeverChels
I agree with @Blue_Mel. TC is the real deal. He should automatically become our undisputable number 1 next season. Cech should be sold or relegated to FA cup / Carling Cups. He's too error prone recently.
RomansArmy
@Merlin, I suggest we run a poll to allow VC members choose b/w Cech and Courtois
RomansArmy
Who gives a flying ***** abt respect! Cech is past it and makes glaring errors virtually every game. Why he's not been replaced by TB already beggars believe! Anybody who thinks otherwise is a *****ing idiot!
Teds Maybank Holiday
Do we necessarily have to send this message to our players that as soon as you get to 30 years you are kind of trash to Chelsea?? Cech can still play for at least 8 years. I understand that Courtois is very good but if he cant extend contract or sit on the bench like Mata lets cash on him. by the way look at Buffon, Vandesar, Casilas, Pirlo, Giggs etc lets respect our senior players age is nothing but just a number.
Victor Hamadziripi
Cech's time is up. Love the guy but its time for Courtois. Walk down memory lane Cech also dislodged a senior goalkeeper (Carlo Cudicini). Time for Cech to move on to pastures new.
StamfordDLion
Giggs has been rubbish for years.
foreign_viewer
he has got the respect and also been handsomely rewarded for all the services he rendered us,now its its time to move on..courtois is better than cech with every passing game i see both of them,so hey!ditch the respect bull***** and let the best man(courtois) win the spot
