Chelsea - Cole v Shaw II (Update)

Chelsea - Cole v Shaw II (Update)

Billed as a showdown as to who will be Leighton Baines under-study at the 2014 World Cup, in Brazil, matters, after England`s 1-0 victory over Denmark, remain as confusing as ever.

Ashley Cole started the fixture, winning his 107th cap whilst his rival for that place on the plane, Luke Shaw played the entire second half.

After the game had finished it was perhaps inevitable that the press corps would confront Roy Hodgson on the subject and the England boss, responding with his usual honesty and freshness, had this to say,

"I thought they were both very good."

"Ashley got forward and his defending was good, and Luke carried on in the same way."

"Leighton Baines didn`t even get a look-in today. You`ll be pushing me even harder now to say which player I`ll use and which one will be understudy."

"It`s tougher now, yes, but there are a lot of matches still to be played."

"I`ll see a lot of Luke Shaw, Leighton Baines and, hopefully, Ashley Cole in the coming months. I wasn`t surprised with Ashley. I`m a great admirer of him."

"To play 107 times for England and to be the best in the world for so long demands respect."

Indeed he does but I get the impression this saga could run and run until Roy Hodgson finally names those who are on the plane to Rio!

Still think it will be Cole, that big game experience will be necessary when they are guarenteed to meet Italy and Uruguay. Baines has less of it than Cole while Shaw has nearly none.

How is this a debate when Cole is past his best and not even getting game time at club level? Coles experience on the highest stage counted for nothing, when Azpilicueta, a right back, benched him this season. I wonder why anyone will be considering taking him to Brazil at the expense of a younger, in-form and better player. Pure sentiments.

No coach in his right senses would send Shaw to the FIFA world cup at the detriment of A. Cole... This is not EPL, FA cup or COC we are talking about and the fact that Jose decided to bench Cole for Azpi doesn't mean Cole is no more a good player.... I honestly don't see any thing extraordinary about Shaw...

Thanks for the dose of common sense from Latunvic. Are the three lions seriously talking of taking a 19yr old kid who just got his first full senior cap for England yesterday and has never faced any opposition better than what he has seen in the BPL with Southampton to be their second LB beyond Leighton Baines whose defensive robustness is also questionable? As i said before we will all be here to watch..if Roy makes that mistake it will be fatal for the three lions. @RomansArmy Cesar is a special athlete and is one of the most versatile athletes at the full back position. He is primarily a right back yes but he has been superior at left back to Cole thus far this season and is now clearly preferred in the La Roja set up to prior RB starter Arbeola..this is no mean fit. Cesar is no rookie..prior to joining us he had been playing major minutes with Osasuna in La Liga and also with Marsielle where he had played in their champions league and europa league campaigns before joining us. This guy has a body of experience to draw on that is wide and deep..this is not some johnny come lately that benched Cole. On the other hand i havent seen anything from Shaw that suggests to me he is comparable to Cole on the defensive side of full back play..Going forward yes he is better and certainly more pacy but defensively he is very naive and against the superior opposition that Italy and Uruguay will provide he will be badly exposed.
