Atletico Madrid - The Final Countdown!

As we prepare to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg, we`ve come up with a few statistics that show just how hard a job we face.

1 - Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 15 clashes against Spanish sides in the Champions League, winning 6 and drawing 9.

2 - The two clubs have met three times in European football, twice in the Champions League where Chelsea have won 1 and drawn 1 and once in the European Super Cup Final whereby we were beaten.

3 - The three games, in European competition, between the two sides have seen 13 goals scored.

4 - Atletico Madrid enter this tie with the best defensive record in the competition having conceded only 5 goals in their 10 Champions League games.

4 - Atletico Madrid are the only team that have yet to be beaten in the Champions League this season winning 8 and drawing 2.

5 - Atletico Madrid have scored in every Champions League game this season, something that is matched only by Bayern Munich.

6 - Atletico Madrid have picked up the most yellow cards in the competition this season, 23.

7 - Chelsea enter this fixture having lost only 1 of their last 10 Champions League knockout ties and that was against Paris St Germain this season when we were defeated 3-1 in Paris.

I know Jose will differ with me. but i feel jose should instruct team to blast Athletico at their home turf for all the frustration we have had against sunderland.

i know i have omitted Rami but his temper is really unpredictable against park the bus teams and athletico is just like that. be sure ref will have one eye always on rami and english media have highlighted it enough in last week. so it's better to keep him out of the lime light for now.

i want fast pressing game from the begining and lamp needs to stay back to help defence. he is no more the super frank going forwrd so it's better if he does the house keeping jobs well for games like this.

i think chelsea must sign Koke from Ath. Madrid. Ramires + 25m for Koke would be awesome business. imgine koke + matic at pivot with hazard costa oscar willian. it would compact team. neither park bus team nor top teams will find a way to beat us.

Athleti, a "park the bus" team. You must be having a laugh. You need to cast your mind back to that super cup game, bbc.

Cech Azpili_Cahil_Terry_Cole Lampard_Luiz_Mikel Willian_Ba_Schurrle We need to be more defensive its an Away game! and Torres doesn't have the stomach to score against the place he grew up in and the club he supports, will be like Drogba at the Bridge.

I haven't had the time to post much lately but let me point out what i have noticed in our last two games (against swansea and sunderland) that i had hardly seen anyone made mention of. Our last two games have point out the fact that our team isn't handling the BPL pressure quite well enough. There is a sudden nervousness, fidgetting, doubt and fear that sets into the team once the game keeps dragging on without us putting it to bed early. This was the reason we found it hard to take a quick advantage of swansea when they went a man down. It was the same reason we kept fidgetting, misplacing passes after passes and sqaundering clear-cut chances while ultimately causing azpi to trip for the second goal. I kept pointing out to people around me that we aren't playing with confidence and that azpi was looking very shaky in the second half. It was the more reason i wasn't surprised he tripped. I think mou overlooked this area against swansea and we paid ultimatley for it against sunderland. I hope against athleti he will have recognised this and preparely our players mentally for the task ahead tonite because truth is athletico ain't no mince meat. They will surely give us a fight for our money. So even when we are struggling to score we will need to keep calm and stay collected. #Upthechles #ktbffh #COYB

@Blue_Mel, lool i see your point. mou is one of the best at that but i think he will be relishing the present task at chelsea than that of ManU. Plus it is at chelsea here he will be a great as SAF. We can build him his own statue here but he just might not get one right there in manchester if he goes.

Naijagunner, I see being clueless about tactics starts all the way from the top with Wenger to fans like yourself. Atletico Madrid park the bus and hit teams on the counter.

IMO there is only one way to beat AM to play at a higher tempo than them. If you sit back, don't put pressure on them as a team you will lose. Simples.

Park the bus against Atletico Madrid? They will park the bus too. It's a draw. Press them? They are fitter than Chelsea players because they've been doing that since Simeone joined them. That would be a disaster.

We have to defend, press and attack as one and not stopping running and working from the first second till the last because Atletico will be doing the same. #Beliieve #upthechels

I am sorry but it would be most unwise to press the issue against Atletico in the Vincente Calderon. They have a more potent attack, their midfield is probably superior since we dont have matic available, the defensive units are probably on par, they probably have the better goalkeeper and most of all if we attack them we play right into their hands because they are built for that sort of game..this is how they have beaten Barca and Real. They are at home, they need to establish an advantage during this leg..we should sit back and let them play in a fashion that they are not accustomed to against decent opposition..Allow them dictate the pace, engage them high up in our half and the midfield and hit them on the counter the way we did against City and the Gunners..if there were ever a game for us to pack the bus..defend stoutly and hit a team on the counter this is it. Which is why not having Salah is a real hit and why Schurrle must start. Hopefully Hazard can play and i would start Ba ahead of El Nino..El nlion should be on the bench and frankly that is because Eto O is not available. I am sorry but i dont see El Nino offering anything of value to the team in this match. I sincerely hope he ends up proving me wrong.

Whatever the tactics we can't afford individual mistakes and poor decision making like we had in Paris we can't afford a big defeat there would be no way back this time

There are quite a few questions regarding our starting lineup: Will Cole play (probably yes), Oscar?, who will partner Luiz in the pivot, Ba or Torres?

@Blue_Mel, if Roman sacks Mourinho for not winning any trophy this season (which he has almost a 100% record of sacking Chelsea managers the season they don't win a trophy), Mourinho will take the United job the next day and he will be challenging for UCL and Premier league the very next season.

Foreign_viewer, so who is parking the bus now? Well said Gabe. Chelsea wouldn't stand a chance going toe to toe with Athleti as they would overrun your midfield and score goals. They still pose a danger playing at your ground because, then you would have to play the game they want.
