The Courtois Situation
Studying the performance of our young Belgian keeper, Thibaut Courtois, doing his utmost to deny us a place in the Champions League Final has opened up the usual can of worms.
On Wednesday night, as Chelsea unsuccessfully tried to ease past Atletico Madrid to reach the final in Lisbon, against Real Madrid, Courtois gave the kind of performance that showed why he is so highly rated.
The youngster belied his tender years by commanding his area with authority, coming to catch several crosses cleanly amidst the usual plethora of players. His handling was sound throughout the game, his shot stopping excellent, his kicking up to standard and the ability to make a world-class save emphasized when he kept out that header from John Terry.
In fact Courtois was only beaten when the shot from Fernando Torres took a deflection to leave him wrong-footed.
Clearly Jose Mourinho has a big decision to make.
With Cech established as our first choice, does Mourinho make the move to ease Courtois in ahead of Cech, does he let the young Belgian stay another year in Serie A, or, heaven forbid, does he use the Belgian as collateral to persuade Atletico Madrid to part with Diego Costa?
It`s probably a question that`s been asked before but, after Wednesday, one that I feel we need to revisit now that so many more Chelsea supporters have seen him in action.
