Centre-Back Chase Continues!

The media, following the sale of David Luiz to Paris St Germain, remain convinced that Chelsea Football Club are on the look-out to bolster their centre back ranks.

Even though we`re expecting the highly rated Kurt Zouma to pitch up and be part of our plans for next season, several news sources are adamant that Jose Mourinho wants to bring another centre-back to Stamford Bridge.

The name in the frame remains a name we`ve mentioned before with it being intimated that Jose Mourinho is prepared to test the water at Real Madrid to see if they could be tempted to sell their exciting young centre-back Raphael Varane

If any move to bring the player to London is unsuccessful, it`s being suggested that Jose Mourinho will turn his attentions to either FC Porto`s Eliaquim Mangala or AS Roma`s Mehdi Banatia.

Your thoughts on this particular subject would be most appreciated!

Would love Varane but I don't think Real will sell. If not we can always promote Kalas. Terry,Cahill,Kalas and Zouma.

why the fek we need a center back...all we need is a cm a striker and a left back....we have enough talent there who should be given chance...

No More CBs...We have adequate people...Buy unless Jose is going to play 9-0-1 seriously as people suggest...

Terry, Cahill, Ivanovic, Kalas, Zouma, Omerou - 5 Internationals + 1 Proved HG player...If Jose thinks we still need a CB, then sorry, JOSE will not win anything next year

The CB position is well stocked. Not required but what do I know, never understood our functioning in the transfer windows!!

At this point i will be the first person to admit i no longer can tell what is fiction and what is fact regarding what the tabloids say regarding Chelsea. Recently things that seemed initially like nonsense and conjecture have turned out to be true. From my limited view point i cannot for the life of me fathom why we need to be chasing another CB when we have 3-4 available even after we mention Cahill and JT as our starters (last i looked we still have Ivanovic, Kalas, Zouma and Omeruo on our books). Why we are not being linked with more strikers, wing forwards, Regista type CMs, and possibly an LB (which is where our real needs lie) is beyond me. I will just close my mind to all of this and enjoy the world cup in peace and then see how Chelsea turns out come Sep 1. Certainly what we achieve in terms of new acquisitions this summer transfer window will determine whether we are on course to begin the building of a dynasty or whether we will be facing a very frustrating season with the potential of Roman's itchy trigger finger once more rearing its ugly head by season's end.

Varane is the best young defender in world football, who is capable of playing anywhere across the back line, he is very fast and similar to a young William Gallas. If he`s available we should grab him.

Am sorry and i stand to be corrected but wasn't real mainly using the combination of pepe and sergio ramos this season? both of whom are not a better combination than terry and cahill? We had signed zouma already and for no small amount and we should stick with him until he proves he doesn't have waht it takes. Our centre defense is well stocked.

@kinky what is wrong with that is that while we are wasting time and resources buying players in areas where we have excess already here are real areas of need we have not addressed. It is this sort of policy that has got us where we are right now with having no one of note to step into the huge shoes of Didier Drogba since he left ~3 yrs ago. It is the same sort of policy that had us sell Miereles and loan out Essien while we bought every CAM we could lay our hands on and to this day we are yet to replace the Maka, Essien, Ballack midfield that made us so feared during the first Jose era. Look at how City constructed their team in the last few years and compare it to what we have been doing. To spend 20-30mill minimum (which BTW is the minimum it would take to make Real even listen to us regarding Varane) on someone like Varane who is no longer a starter at Real because of a recent rash of injuries while we are lacking a top notch striker, a Regista to partner Matic, rather thin at LB and really lacking a true no 10 unless we decide to move Hazard there is i daresay irresponsible and frankly strikes me as having misplaced priorities that will come back to bite us in the behind by the time this transfer season closes. Also BTW David Luiz is a unique talent..there is no way in Heaven we will ever be able to sell Kalas or Zouma to anyone for how much we pay Real to get Varane..they dont need our money and to get him from them we are going to have to pay way over the odds to a tune that will waste a huge chunk of the David Luiz funds we got from PSG..that in my mind is not a wise way to manage our funds; that is just me but i will be the first to admit i dont have Jose's wealth of experience and it is not my neck on the line if he decides to go that route. The results justify the means. If Jose decides to spend big money on another defender like Varane instead of a striker, CM and/or top notch no 10 i will support him all the way though i will in my mind believe he has his priorities wrong. If it all works out well and we secure a bunch of trophies next season i will be the first here to say i had it so wrong..if however it goes south we all know what the consequences may be.

No new CB needed. We are frankly stocked. Get a striker or two, DLP and a LB.

@GabeU...I agree with Kinky. Though we need a CM, Varane is more like buying Carvalho. He will give Jose more option than JT, Cahill, Kalas and co. Its like asking why we need Costa when we have Eto, Ba and Torres. On paper that strike force is better than Arsenal and could match Liverpool's. In reality its something else. Our defense had good numbers primarily because we had to ask Eden, Oscar and co to defend. Not saying its bad to defend, but pointing out it was to highlight the fact that we were masking a lot of weaknesses at the back. Most of the time our defenders (apart from Azpi) were really tested, they were found wanting.....unless if we parked the bus. Parking the bus was to protect Iva, JT and Cahill. We replaced Cole with Azpi and the difference was all there to see. Trust me its the same with the other 3 not to mention JT is 34 this year. Look at it this way....JT is the best out of Gary and Iva yet he is nowhere near his best of what he used to be....and he wasnt even as good as Ricky and to an extend Alex. That means in order for us to get to our previous level...we cant do it with the current crop. We have to look elsewhere.
