A Huge Squad Turnover!

A Huge Squad Turnover!

This afternoon, with nothing much to view on the television, I tuned into my copy of the 2012 Champions League Final.

You know, the one in which we beat Bayern Munich, in their own backyard, to win the trophy for the first time in our history.

But one thing struck me, namely just how much the squad has changed.

Take a look for yourselves:-

Starting XI v Bayern

Petr Cech
• Jose Bosingwa (gone)
Gary Cahill
• David Luiz (gone)
• Ashley Cole (going)
John Obi Mikel
• Frank Lampard (going)
• Juan Mata (gone)
Ryan Bertrand
• Salomon Kalou (gone)
• Didier Drogba (gone)

Subs v Bayern

• Ross Turnbull (gone)
• Paulo Ferreira (retired)
• Michael Essien (gone)
Oriol Romeu
• Florent Malouda (gone)
• Daniel Sturridge (gone)
Fernando Torres

Gone - 9
Retired - 1
Going - 2

Futures in doubt - Bertrand, Romeu, Mikel,

Now that is some turnover considering the game was a little over 2 years ago!

Except for Drogba/sturridge guess we were right to let them go cos none of them turned out to be great players elsewhere. Even Drogba cant give any club 20 goals a season any more. Sturridge i accept has bin good since he left perhaps cos of pool style but seing he has no trophy to boast for ,have little

By next season Gary Cahill might be just about the only one left getting a regular start. It really was the last flickers of a great team. Now Jose needs to build the new one into winners.

Yeah it is a bit of a turnover from Munich. But take recent window last Jan and now itself, Mata, KDB and Essien left. Bertrand left on loan and as above stated his future's in doubt. Now already Eto'o, Cole, Luiz, have left, Lamps and Schwarzer almost out the door, doubts about BA, Mikel, persist and so on. I just hope Jose is able to formulate the squad in his image, but if it doesn't work, then it could spell his end. Hoping it turns out great. #upthechels

What is disturbing is the players leaving and no one coming in ,sure we hearrumors about everyone from Costa to Tiago but nothing concrete ,everyday we see Lukaku shopped around .It just makes you wonder what is going on ?.

Don't worry guys, Jose is on our side. He'll get his own players and we'll become winners again. Just give it time and trust in the man at the top.
01/06/2014 18:16:00
You are absolutely correct Botum. Jose is at the helm. He will get the players we need.
01/06/2014 18:56:00
@botum..the cause for concern is that time is a luxury Jose doesnt have much of. Last season was his season of grace. We all know who our owner is and his reputation. i have no doubt that Jose given suifficient time will build a winning side that will last a footie generation..he did it at Porto and with us on the first go around but this coming season may well be make or break for him..the number of players we have lost already with no single player in is concerning..the longer into the transfer window it takes us to secure our targets the less likely we will be to get the players we want at half decent prices. If we wait till after the world cup we will be caught up in a mad dash with every dick and Harry in Europe..if we are wise we would try to secure our targets before or during the world cup to ensure they have some semblance of a preseason with their new team mates. Problem is we are in a sellers market. We have already made close to 50 mill from one blockbuster sale but unless we get some top quality replacements in before this window closes the losses of Luiz, Cole, Lamps and yes even Mata will come and bite us in our behinds real hard. Even more alarming is that the exits are not even done yet by a long shot..very likely guys like Ba, certainly Eto, maybe El Nino (if we are lucky,) maybe Schwarzer, Hilario, then fringe players like Moses, Marin, Romeu, Kakuta and maybe even PVA and Bertrand will likely also see the exit. What is happening right now is that our depth is being cut to ribbons and unless big time reinforcements come in this coming season could get ugly real quick. Jose will really have his work cut out for him this coming season.

Agree with GabeU ,this is exactly what makes me nervous .

The players we lost might have been quality but they have become just squad players and in other words mere numbers. Mata, KDB, Frank and Luiz where not starters but players used in special circumstances. Jose had pretty much replaced them by the time they left. Thats not the same as losing Ballack, Carvalho and Didier. Lets face it Luiz had lost his position back to JT and Cahill who themselves stand to be replaced by Varane and someone else. As a midfielder Luiz was now only effective against top 4-5 teams and a liability against mid to lower table teams. Mata had been replaced by Oscar/Willian. What this team was and is still lacking are not numbers. Its the spine of the team. Behind Cole there are 3 players: Ryan, PVA and Ake. Behind Mata and KDB we have Oscar, Willian, and Paizon. The players we are looking for (striker, CM, central defender) were going to be here regardless of whether Mata, Luiz and co were here. With say Varane and a true CM here Luiz would have been a 4th or 5th choice CB and 3rd choice midfielder.

Jose and the board i believe will do what is appropriate. But one point i have to point out is the idea that roman will have to give jose the boot if he doesnt win anything next season. If there is a coach to standby it is someone in the class of jose cos you know at the end of it all will turn good. If he gets the boot its our loss anyways as it will throw us back into reassembling with the next manager. Hence it will be wise to forget about anyone getting sacked for now while all hands should be on deck.
01/06/2014 20:13:00
Fair point @Kola and I think most fans share your concern/point but Roman obviously doesn't see things that way. It would take divine intervention for Roman not to sack Jose if we end next season without a trophy. It will be difficult to convince Roman that sacking Jose after another trophyless season will be our loss since we end up winning a trophy almost everytime Roman sacks a coach and trophy is what most fans care about...
01/06/2014 23:19:00
We have seen stories linking sale of all our future prospects....This is really disturbing and make me hate Jose for not rating these prospects...
02/06/2014 05:56:00
I expect chelsea to win any of UCL or EPL and FA Cup next year...
02/06/2014 05:57:00
A squad overhaul was a must. As it is said to see the players like Lamps, Drogs and Cole leave, it was/is a must. Luiz and lamps are already gone, Mikel is on the way out, that makes 2/3 new places in the pivot-matic, Rami, Tiago, Koke/Pogba with MvG probably heading out on loan and when he returns, he takes Tiago's place in the team. If we loan out Lukaku, manage to offload Torres and buy Costa/Falcao, we might keep Ba, for the third striker can be either Schurrle or Bamford. With Lamps, Cole, Luiz gone, I think we can still afford to sell Cech, Mikel and Torres.
02/06/2014 06:32:00
Tiago is 33. Bad signing. He's no Pirlo.
02/06/2014 07:23:00
Willian and Salah are not better than Mata, De Bruyne and Moses.
02/06/2014 08:52:00
Willian & Salah are better than De Bruynne & Moses...not better than mata in terms of attacking, but better in defense...
02/06/2014 09:04:00
It is really alarming how we are busy selling or releasing players with none coming in yet. Everyday we are linked with all sorts of names yet none is a done deal. I am really against the wholesale changes made/expected to be made to the squad used last season. Jose was unable to know his best XI for a better part of the 1st half of last season and I see him in such dilemma again if too many changes are made to the squad.
02/06/2014 09:18:00
@Latunvic, well i hope divine intervention comes. These wholesale changes is all too weird for me. Too many changes will throw us off balance again. Tiago is no better than any of the midfielder we have. We have lost luiz and maybe lamps and it will be totally idiotic to loose mikel too all in the same window. Its best if the changes are quite minimal.
02/06/2014 11:24:00
De Bruyne did not have the stomach to fight for his place at Chelsea and when he got a rare chance didn't do much. The player wanted to leave because he could not get into the team. Willian worked hard and forced himself into, not only the Chelsea team, but also the Brazil team. Salah has a great ability to consistently get into good goalscoring positions. If he can learn to keep his composure Chelsea will have a fantastic player. If he never learns he will be sold and Chelsea will get their money back.
