Terry vs Gerrard: The Captaincy debate

Of course, records and statistics are up for public consumption, and although some experts say they don't always tell the whole story of what actually transpires on the football pitch, they however are pointers to one fact or the other.

And now that Roy Hodgson's Three Lions have lamely crashed out of the FIFA World Cup for the umpteenth time having managed to record our worst ever outing in the history of the tournament, under the captaincy of Steven Gerrard, the Liverpool captain who succeeded Chelsea captain John Terry, it has become imperative in some quarters to launch an inquisition of sorts into the two captaincies.

So folks, especially those of you who love crunching numbers, between Terry and Gerrard who is largely to blame for lacking leadership as England fell to his Liverpool teammate Luis Suarez, who's been the better England captain?

england no matter who is the captain wont win any any major tournaments...because the problem is the they have good player but their good player is nowere near the level of other countries player....and in the future also it wont change...the only solution is giving Roman abromovich the charge of FA...he will make sure all the top player will play for england by buying them...or start a cloning factory of mixbredding...

Terry ,Terry ,Terry ,Gerrard's record speaks for itself ,"bin dipping master of disaster ". This year alone he screwed his own team out of the EPL title and assisted his team mate in eliminating us ,all in less than two months .

The issue here isn't who the captain is... England's problem lies in team selection and tactics...

england were so poor but good if that makes sense... good chances and rooney fecked all but 1 of them (a tap in) he missed a free header and a very good chance to level against italy. the team selection again was poor. easy to say as we lost... but why he brought ZERO holding players and to play in a 4231 pivot is beyond me. barry would have been better than henerson. gerrard was over played. rooney on the wing??? WTF it was simple 442 dimond suited EVERYONE better. barkley needed to start after his season. banes was so bad and glad he will never be in another WC squad again. same with johnson. the only way we will be ready for a WC is if we stop trying to copy other counties style and start our own. one main thing my friends say and i agree is our groups in quailfying are SO POOR that we trick ourselves into thinking he dont need to improve. come the competition he get r@ped and its shows....

NO mate, I think it's rather daft to assume what you assume is “obvious” is obvious to everyone. And Latunvic, of course nobody is saying team selection and tactics ain't to blame for this fiasco or that England would've failed to crash out of the world football festival before it even started(and obviously that wasn't and still isn't the object of this article), but do you think we can't have an objective comparison of the Terry/Gerrard captaincies? I don't think it's impossible.

@Josh, I wouldn't say it's impossible but it certainly will be very difficult to have an objective comparison as almost everyone here will readily choose Terry just as most Liverpool fans will choose Gerard on their site. Moreover, what would be the yardstick for an objective comparison? I just don't think the exercise will yield anything productive or meaningful... What England needs now is to look at how to improve the future...

Yes future, I gotta concede that though it seems England's future couldn't look any bleaker with Roy set to stay on :(

Not just JT but Cole too would have added experience and leadership. Even Lamps would have added something considering the numerous times he has played in pivot over two seasons and more now.

First In terms of "better captaincy" i guess it's obvious that JT is the one....england need experience....i just can't imagine england dropping Barry for henderson for this world cup campaign....and dropping ashley cole for the likes of shaw and baines...the tactics were all wrong.....if roy can't come up with his own attacking style of play i think he should be shown the way out of the squad....i prefer capello's era....roy turned three lions into three kittens....SMH!!!

England has to teach their players that football is not about running and moving the ball forward at each opportunity. Mikel played the ball sideways and backwards and won against Bosnia.
