Schwarzer Signs for Another Year!

Schwarzer Signs for Another Year!

With Jose Mourinho insisting that the young Belgian keeper, Thibaut Courtois, would be returning to Stamford Bridge next season, having spent three years on loan at Atletico Madrid, a piece of news broke yesterday that surprised many people.

Chelsea announced that 41 year-old Mark Schwarzer had put pen-to-paper on a new 1-year deal.

Following his arrival from Fulham, last summer, many supporters thought that the signing of Schwarzer would be merely to provide back-up for Petr Cech, what with Ross Turnbull having left the club.

However, it would appear that Schwarzer, stepping in for the injured Petr Cech in the final matches of the 2013/2014 season performed so well that the club perceived he was worth another 12 months.

One can only suspect that Schwarzer will be the 3rd choice keeper for Chelsea Football Club next season behind Cech and Courtois in the pecking order, unless Atletico Madrid have persuaded Chelsea to let them have the classy young Belgian keeper for a fourth season!

And by the way, why is Courtois not included in the list of first team players in the official website?

Could be a hint that Courtois is going to stay in Spain again but then it could also mean that Cech is going. As for the list, it will probably be updated after the World Cup.

@Botom...the non inclusion of Courtois is a ridiculous story...Lampard , Cole and others are included when tehy are patently NOT going to be here ...Costa (at least before yesterday ) wasnt included.. do Chelsea have a photo of TC in a Blue shirt?? Though this deal for Schwarzer is giveing AM some encouragement over TC. T dont understand why. IF we loan them TC AGAIN, Chelsea are clearly stupid - loop loo even . It would be a mistake of gigantian proportians.

Courtois on not on th list of 1st team players because he has not made his debut for chelsea yet and does not have a squad number. Others too like omeruo, atsu, zouma are not on the list. Fabregas is on the list having not make his debut because the club has assigned him a number so his jersey sales can commence and take advantage of his commercial potential. Jose made it clear, courtois is coming back and his name would posted there as soon as pre-season commence and he is assigned a squad number

I can't see us keeping Courtois & Cech. Something has to give. If Courtois signs a new contract we might send him back to AM one more year either that or we cash in Cech for £10m or so. Schwarzer is a decent back up although I keep thinking if he hadn't spilled that shot against Sunderland for their equalizer Chelsea would have won the league.

@Chelz Akamz, if that's the case then it's ok. I want to trust Jose's world that after world cup Courtois will come straight back to the bridge.
