'If It's Football, It's Vital'

On Lukaku

At the age of 21 in the history of the Premier League there are 2 forwards who achieved a lot of goals - Wayne Rooney of Everton and Michael Owen of Liverpool. Until recently Owen held the record for the most goals scored by the 21st birthday in the Premier League by player.

That record was shattered by a player recently. His name is Romelu Lukaku.

Going through the articles of last few days I was surprised at the number of ill informed comments and childish arguments regarding the said player. There are some things I would like to set the record on.

Firstly as this was covered in the initial paragraphs Lukaku is the best young striker not just now but in the history of the Premier League. He knows where the back of the net is and that`s` something our 3 strikers regularly forgot . Lukaku outshone them. The popular argument to this point is that Lukaku only played at WBA and Everton. Playing for Chelsea is something else. Wayne Rooney played at Everton too but that didn`t stop Sir Alex from paying what was at that time a fortune for a young striker.

Secondly I read comments that we should sell him for 20 million. This is a bit ridiculous as we bought him for 17 million when he was completely unproven in the league. After he shatters Owen's records his value has just gone up by 3 million? That`s just naive. It`s not like he is on the last year of his contract. Add to this another point which a lot of people miss - why were Shaw, Henderson, Lallana, or even Carroll bought for inflated prices? No it`s not due to the romanticism of buying 'English players' but the practicality of homegrown rules of the FA and UEFA.

Lukaku counts as a homegrown player for Chelsea in the Premier League and association trained in the Champions League. What this basically means is that Lukaku is just as 'English' according to the rules as many of the overpriced stars who are bought for ransoms

What this means is if we sell Lukaku, a record breaking 21 year old striker with a fantastic resale value who can count as a potentially homegrown player to a direct rival then it has to be for an absolute killing.

In case we do keep him he frees up valuable squad space for the 17 international slots. After loosing a raft of English/homegrown players like Cole and Lampard and with other English/homegrown players like Bertrand potentially leaving added to the fact that this time next year we could loose Terry too, one can simply not understate the value of homegrown players like Cesc Fabregas and Lukaku necessary to ensure we have a solid homegrown roster without significant compromise on quality. We cannot upgrade 6 academy boys to complete a 25 man squad without compromising on meaningful depth necessary to challenge on all fronts and at the same time hamper the development of those academy boys when they could be playing week in week out on loan.

If you think about it barring Rooney and Strurridge how many homegrown strikers are there in the league of a high level. I can hardly think of any, and if you, the reader can I`m sure it` ll be looking for needles in a haystack.

Now on the issue of attitude - This is probably the most childish reason to sell him. We are a football club not a soap opera. It`s in the nature of players to make stupid comments. Some player`s, especially young ones are even more likely. But surely Lukaku's comments, although immature, can not be as immature and childish as the comments about him that merlin is fed up off. According to some of the members Jose Mourinho is an egomaniac. But to be honest this egomaniac coudn`t give a rat's backside about comments made by players about him or the club before he signed them or while they are out on loan. Fabregas thought Mourinho should shut up a few months back and now he can`t shut up about how happy he is to play for a great coach. Eto'o would have rather sold peanuts than play for a club like Chelsea, apparently he coudn`t find any peanuts. I could go on about other players as well like Deco, Carvalho etc but here is a case of two players who spoke pretty badly about the manager or the club but it didn`t really matter because football is not about emotional sop stories but about the players ability to deliver. Jose doesn`t care if his player is a prick if he performs on the field (Costa),

What is also interesting is that many fans and large sections of the media are completely unaware that Jose actually rates Lukaku very highly. I`m not even talking about the times when Jose made dreary trips to Goodison to follow Lukaku's progress. Mourinho had tried to sign Lukaku at the age of 17 to be his third choice striker behind Higuain and Benzema only for Lukaku's father to intervene and say Lukaku had to finish his schooling before he left the Belgian league. Adebayor was then signed on loan instead. Mourinho did go back for Lukaku a year later but the players love for Chelsea meant we snapped him up.

About being scared of competition - this is another sweeping generalizing statement. Circumstances and history lead to situations. In his first season with us after signing for a mammoth fee of 17 million as a teenager Lukaku had to play in the reserves thanks to AVB. An entire year in a reserve team after beasting the Belgian League must have been a big backward step for any top prospect.

The following year Lukaku benefitted from the leaving the club of his dreams and the reserve team for a stint at WBA and the benefit was for all to see. Now at the start of last season one can imagine what went on in Romelu's mind. Demba Ba's was almost certainly going on loan meaning Lukaku was originally under the impression that he would be fighting with Torres and a new striker for the shirt. But that`s` when Ba's loan was rightly vetoed by Mourinho as he didn`t want to do Arsenal any favours and the world class Samuel Eto'o joined.

Now at this given point Eto'o was still a big, big star. Ba was actually a much bigger name than he is now as only 6 months back he was tearing it apart with Newcastle. And then Torres, the board favourite was there. This immediately meant Lukaku was a fourth choice and possibly going to be doing some more reserve game thingy. At this point neither Lukaku nor most of us know that all the other three strikers would bomb that season and he would have got a chance to play games for us. It was a highly unlikely scenario.

Matters only got complicated when the league started and Christian Benteke scored against both Arsenal and Chelsea in the first two weeks carrying off from where he left. Now this was a World Cup year and no one knew Benteke would miss the World Cup through injury and also have a patchy season. Any punter would have bet on Benteke the star leading Belgium over fourth choice Chelsea striker Lukaku. In the next week Wilmots, the coach of Belgium, further dropped a bomb by making it clear players who weren`t playing regular club football wouldn`t go to Brazil. Under the circumstances Romelu had no choice but to request a loan.

About his media friendly stupid quotes - Breaking news. Ambitious 21 year olds do immature things. Some throw darts at youth players, some sleep around with anyone and everyone and some just talk and talk when they see a mike. Romelu's habit is not as damaging as it`s perceived to be. Yes its a bit embarrassing at times but the club cant stop it when players are out on loan (re - Courtois)

One thing I can guarantee is whether is Lukaku or Courtois they will have no choice but to shut up once in the squad as indiscipline equals bench time in Mourinho's books. So that's that.

On perceived lack of ability - There is a common misconception that Lukaku is an all brawn no brain striker. The things that some fans expect from a 21year old centre forward is just unreal. Take for example first touch. Every time I hear about how awesome Drogba's first touch and hold up play was for us I wince. For starters Drogba was signed at 25, not 21. Secondly it took another year or two to become flawless in those qualities.

His work-rate may be a bit short sometimes but I have always felt with that kind of a frame Lukaku tends to conserve energy to support those sudden lung busting runs. His stamina and work-rate will improve every year and when he reaches his physical peak of 27-28 yrs he will be just as good as anyone else. In fact within a year or two you will see marked physical capacity increase.

Any flaw Lukaku has like first touch, link up play or movement are things that come with experience not inborn talent for centre forwards. Costa, Drogba etc picked up this stuff by the time they reached the peak. And no disrespect to them, at the same age of 21 none of Drogba, Costa, Cavani, Falcao were a scratch on Romelu.

His strengths are unique - Firstly he is a beast, when he came on as a sub against the USA, Rio Ferdinand couldn`t help but chuckle that the USA defenders were going to get beasted. While Rio Ferdinand isn`t a football expert, believe me he would know what getting beasted meant having been beasted himself by Romelu. The best part is Lukaku not only has the raw strength that is un-paralled he knows how to use it to his advantage.

His pace is very, very good and surprising for someone his size and people don`t see to notice how good his dribbling skills are for his size. His finishing from inside the box is very reliable and lets face it we don`t really need strikers roaming everywhere and scoring wonder-goals, we need strikers who can finish simple chances inside the box and just put the ball in the back of the neck using their backsides if they have to, something our strikers just couldn`t do last year.

On HIS ROLE - How can we use this guy? Imagine opposition defenders getting battered and bruised by Diego Costa for 60-65 mins only to see Romelu Lukaku come on. That is called getting beasted twice. Chasing a game and want to play two forwards? Play Costa and Lukaku up front. All four defenders get 'double beasted'. Add to the fact that Costa is right footed and Lukaku left footed meaning they can play LS and RS in such situations and occupy the entire backline and provide two targets and create space for every Chelsea player to run into.

He can also be used to kill off games on the counter. Effectively he will average more than 40% game time whether as a starter or a sub over 60 matches which is quite a lot.

His quotes hinting he is on the look out for a new club - This has 'clever agent/advisers' written all over it. Many a time players actually read our prepared scripts by their agents during international tournaments. Its no surprise Madrid are after James Rodriguez after him stating how he preferred them.

Why does this happen? Either the agent is trying to get his player to move or as I suspect in this case get a pay rise. Lukaku has 2 yrs on his deal left and whether he stays or gets loaned out he will be signing a new contract if he is a part of our future. Such scripted speeches about transfers gives the agent increased bargaining power on the negotiation table. I would be pissed if Lukaku named clubs and said how it would be a dream to play for them . But giving non-committal quotes like 'I'll see after the World Cup. Or I`m focusing on my NT' are pretty mundane agent scripted stuff that`s basically run of the mill and nothing to get worked up about.

What we need to do - Get him to sign a new contract for both economic and footballing reasons.

Economic reasons - Strikers are worth their weight in gold. Looking at Lukaku's career graph when he hits his peak his transfer value after 4-5 yrs would be obscene owing to him being a striker who can become the Falcao/Cavani type deal of tomorrow plus the fact that inflation is high in the football market. You dont want to sell him for 25 million today and see him sold after 4-5 yrs by the club that buys him for a 100 million

Footballing reasons - the whole article covers this aspect. Now it`s only a decision whether Jose wants him in the squad immediately (how much worse can he do than Torres or Ba) or loan him one last time. But we have to ensure he signs a new deal to avoid a Sturridge like situation

Loaning him to Diego Simeone would be an attractive proposition even though Atletico board are pricks because the basic principles and tactics used and certain value systems like - fighting for your teammates, work ethics etc are very similar to Jose's way of doing stuff (this is why we are buying so many Atleti players- they just slot in perfectly to Mourinho's plans).

Another option would be to keep him with Costa and sign someone like Aubameyang to offer another tactical option provided we get rid of Torres and Ba.

I am sorry that the article was this long but it had to be, because the number of ill-informed and illogical comments about the player were just too damn high the last few days!

superbbbbbb article from saber....nailed it perfectly....
shlok27
Top notch article saber! I have been clamouring for us to sell the dude because of his bad mouth and non extraordinary qualities on the ball rather than scoring a few goals here and there but after reading this, I think I agree we should offer him a new contract and place him behind costa as our 2nd striker. He should get enough game time to show us what he can do and if he doesn't impress us well enough at the end of the season we should sell. Costa - Lukaku - Torres/new striker is probably good enough to win us the league, no?
don delsy
Very comprehensive and informative article from saber. Funny thing is the lukaku debate has gone on for so long, people had already taken sides and i can only hope such beautiful article as this will help change their position. That said saber, shaw-lallana-henderson-carroll = English Players hence their inflated prices.
kolagold25
It would be stupid to loan him to Atletico with two years on his contract .Unless he signs an extension he should go no where .
Michael Reid
Lakaku? You should thank 'her' for keeping you relevant. Great article, saber.
ForeverChels
Very good comprehensive article Saber. His stats are good and he's only 21 but every time I watch him he doesn't convince me.He might get better but only time will tell.As regarding Lallana being overpriced,I don't agree. In fact I think Saints should have got more for him.His control and quick change of direction, with pace is superb. He can beat players with ease and will only get better.
THEBREEZE
thanks saber
habbo
home grown is not English, cannot be a club of foreign players. but selling him is out of the question. just buy some English players please.
Thomas Collins
Good article, but i dont think there is a single team who is willing to bid more than 20m for this lad. Anyway, if he can shut his mouth & sign an extension, then he can have his choice of either fighting for chelsea first11 or be loaned out to At.Madrid.The ball is on Lukaku court and he has to take a decision. I hope he takes a wise decision and make all those who have so much positive things on him to feel good. Else, we all will look silly.
Blu_run
Some will choose to Excuse and Overlook Lukaku's Transgressions whereas some won't. I fall in the latter category. You argue that Lukaku pushed for a Loan Move because he felt that his Belgium Place was in threat. There lies a problem. His commitment to Chelsea, and willingness to fight for a place. Chelsea being his Employer don't care about his Belgium place. What's the point of seeking for a Loan Move at the 11th hour of the Transfer Window. Media reports were coming up about how Chelsea would loan BA to Arsenal and keep Eto, Torres and Lukaku in the squad.
StamfordDLion
I am not Comfortable about extending his contract and loaning him to another club. If we do that, I feel that he will continue with his Yapping. Better to sell him abroad for a profit. I agree with you that 20 million is too low. 23-25 is alright with me. Don't believe that clubs will offer more than that for him.
StamfordDLion
And i am glad saber also touched on the subject that interests me about lukaku's contract which is we desperately need him to sign an extension. Having him go on loan and have his contract reduced at season end to a year will be like sturridge 2.0 am afraid
kolagold25
You say that teams will be quaking in their boots when Lukaku will come in as a Battering Substitute. I say that teams will be quaking in their boots if we getting Mario M./Sanchez would be nice (a bit of a long shot)/Aubameyang
StamfordDLion
Your nation is what you have! It comes above any other thing. One would still find it easy going to have a section of your clun supporter against you than to have a whole nation turned against you. I can't possibly blame the youngman if he chooses the importance of playing for belgium over chelsea. I would do the same if in the same position albeit i would do away with much talking @stamford
kolagold25
Jose may have been interested in Lukaku when he was 17 But I really wonder how interested he is now. I remember how Jose practically forced Lukaku to come out to the Media and admit that it was Lukaku, himself and not Jose who pushed for a loan move (the time when the Media and public was criticising Jose for loaning Lukaku and driving him away from the squad apparently for missing the final penalty kick against Bayern)
StamfordDLion
Saberrrrrrrrr!!!!!!! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!?!?! honestly i was part of the sell lukaku brigade cos i was seriously tired of his press releases and obvious show of loyalty.. on twitter.. at the start of the season. however with this article, i am willing to sheath my sell lukaku sword and say lets give him a benefit of doubt either with the club as second striker behind Costa and torres or Aubameyang as additional options or we sign him to a contract and loan him out to A. Madrid.... hopefully mourinho will choose the best option.
Dwonder
Well let him continue with his yapping so far he is tied down on a long term contract and keeps improving on whatever loan he is on, i actually can overlook like chelsea has been overlooking his yappings
kolagold25
Only in England is Lallana worth 25m.
foreign_viewer
kola: Some were saying that Mata pushed for a move to United last season because he felt that his spot in the Spanish side was in jeopardy. I distinctly remember Mata's Reaction when he was Substituted and Jose's Reaction at the press conference of that match.
StamfordDLion
Overrating 27 year old"prospect" Lallana while underrating the best 21 year old striker in the world, Lukaku, doesn't look good.
foreign_viewer
The assassin strikes again...well written Saber. I believe Romelu will get his chance at Stamford bridge next season. That is the logical way to go IMO unless he extends his contract in which case we may consider sending him out again for a final season but I believe he is ready to star behind Costa at cfc now
JohnnyOz
Kola: We can only SPECULATE at this Moment. You and I, and even the author of this article are not a part of Chelsea's board and Jose's inner circle. We can only Speculate. I for one am not Comfortable with Chelsea Players YAPPING against Chelsea.
StamfordDLion
No player is bigger than Chelsea. Lukaku is a Good 21 year old player. I give you that. But he is not a World Class player and heaven knows how his story might pan out in the next few years.
StamfordDLion
What's the point of keeping a player in the Squad or loaning a player who might Talk about Chelsea in a Negative Light. Players like this have the potential to bring disharmony in the squad, undermine the manager and the club. Just sell him I say.
StamfordDLion
I am not of such view about why mata left. I am of the believe mata left because he couldn't stand being a peripheral figure for us after he had been such a huge and important player for us since he arrived.
kolagold25
Kola: I agree with you. I think that Mata pushed for a move because he was finding it hard to get regular runs on the pitch. BUT Some were saying that Mata also pushed for a move because he wanted playing time and last season was crucial because of the World Cup.
StamfordDLion
Kola: Did you see Lukaku's reaction when he was substituted for Origi? He petulantly pushed aside the hands of Belgium's manager, Marc Wilmots who is the highest scoring Belgian player in the WC ever and a Legendary Figure in Belgium. I don't warm up to players who think about themselves too much than the TEAM.
StamfordDLion
i am only speculating either. But nevermind he hasn't been has naughty as a certain Mario Balo. And again, have you ever thought that this guy is yapping out of frustration?? Without forgetting AVBomb sent this guy to the reserves and he didn't create much fuss
kolagold25
Jose has much better things to do than to potentially Baby Sit and Mollycoddle a 21 year old Man.
StamfordDLion
Who are ya mcquinchels? stop with the verbal posturing Magicman - too obvious it's you! Most educated people can easily see through the similarities in writing styles. Cover blown - party done! I personally like HGH even after the ego set in...I don't think he was banned bcos he is now one of the site journalists a la Josh Mou, some funny biz going on there and Merlin must know something too ;)
JohnnyOz
Enough with the personal insults...unbecoming for someone so educated Magic
JohnnyOz
Kola: I have always said that if he is Frustrated, he should be voicing his concerns to Jose in PRIVATE. What's the point of Yapping to the Media? The Media are not nice and kind to Jose and Chelsea.
StamfordDLion
Yep i saw it @stamford, but guess what even marc wasn't too egoistic not to let go of issues and he had to use the same player - who scored and gave an assist - to win his last match.
kolagold25
I feel that he is Alienating himself from Jose with his Antics. He might be the Best 21 year old Striker. But there are 22, 23, 23, 25 year old strikers who are Better Than Him. I refuse to be Swept Away by this "He is the Best 21 Year Old Striker". One can argue that Neymar who is one year older than him is way better than him.
StamfordDLion
The World Cup is a Cup Run. Not more than 5/6 games are played. In clubs football, we are talking about a whole season. Chelsea play more than 50 games per season I reckon. Clash of EGOS will not help the Squad I tell you.
StamfordDLion
Hats Off to Marc Wilmot for being the Better Man.
StamfordDLion
Excellent article Saber.... I couldn't agree less.........
DonDhammih
More than bringing on Lukaku as a substitute in that match. I am more impressed by the fact that he had the guts to start with a 19 year old Origi against Belgium.
StamfordDLion
'jose has much better things to do than to potentially Baby Sit and Mollycoddle a @! year old Man'... I believe you have said it all right there, let's just wait and see what jose decides then
kolagold25
Kola: I am with you. Lets see what Jose and Chelsea decide. Cheers.
StamfordDLion
Really? Well i would say i am more impressed that he had brought in Origi to win a game when he saw it fit at the expense of a disrespectful lukaku. And also bringing in a disrespectful lukaku to win yet another game from the bench when he saw it fit. These days, everybody play young teens its hardly an achievement anylonger.
kolagold25
Cheers bro :)
kolagold25
Well, Kola: Brazil haven't (Fred), Germany haven't (Muller/Klose), Croatia haven't (Mario M.) England haven't (Rooney) Italy haven't (Mario) Netherlands (RVP, Huntelaar, Lens) and so on. Could you tell me of a Top Team (Belgium are considered as a Dark Horse) who have started with an under 20 player. Origi is 19. ???
StamfordDLion
Excellent article as usual @saber.
SameX
Nice article saber.
syed230183_chelseafc
The article is purely on the assumption that Lukaku wants to stay with us and the club is not willing to offer the extension. But, if he rejects the contract extension, the article will be meaningless. No clubs will offer more than 20m for him and we will be forced to sell him for cheap like sturridge. If this happens, I prefer to give him a malouda treatment rather than the 15m we may get.
Blu_run
Solution to this, will be found after the world cup. Until that time, the fight/trolls here will go on. No one stop that.
Blu_run
Excellent article, there is no way that we should sell him. We kept Kalou for years who was nothing short of average. Lukaku is 3 times the player and should at least be given a chance with us, before shipping him out and then wanting to sign him back for double the fee in the future, like we did with Matic. If Lukaku was on our playing staff last season, we would have walked the league.
Blueheart9
Lovely piece sabre, comprehensive and thoughtful. McQuins is @Mq, just figured it out now...lol, Howzit Boet???
Gian-Franco/Luca
Excellent article. He does need to accept that he will not be the first name on the team sheet every match, but that is what playing at a top three club means.
Maestro_Zola
Nah, McQ is not @MQ... I know @mq when I see one. LOL!
SameX
McQuinns isnt HGH magic. its @Mq. stamfordDlion is barking up the wrong tree
saber
and its nice to see all of u guys again
saber
Yes the assasin with "another big bang" on Lukaku that suddenly change the thought of entire vital chelsea community. Welcome back @Saber, i hail ya for the well thought after, informative & educative article, thank you once again for being there for us. You 've at last unleashed the comprehensive version of what some of us are posting calling for restraint, but somehow ignored for mainly emotional reasons. Some of us went went as far to preach the gospel & sue for peace that we should give the lad a break & accept/support whatever decision(s) Jose & the board come up wrt his future, but all to no avail. More of that on other contentious areas pls. KTBFFH!!!
Jerry Blues
I'm glad that Lukaku's biggest fan took the time to set some things straight. I live in the moment. At the moment, the kid isn't playing for Chelsea. He's not the greatest 21 year old striker ANYWHERE until he's accomplished something FOR HIS OWN CLUB. What part of that do we not understand? When he comes back into the fold, and starts actually playing football the way he - and all of his fanboys - claim that he plays, then we'll talk about changes of heart. I'm just not interested in all of this hype around Lukaku. I want to see my club winning matches, and I could care less about one single player. There's 10 other men on the pitch at a given time, and we only ever seem to talk about one. (who doesn't even grace ours, at the moment)
solid7
Saber, you are the fans version of Jose, you've nailed it well there again. Nice article. @StamfordDLion,give up the "yapping" issue you have with Lukaku and re-access his attitude come January or next summer. Some many jibes from McQ and StamfordDLion is spoiling the essence of the site.
DANNYGOLD
Nicely written article without doubt with solid points, but while I agree with some salient points and facts (not some concocted bull*****), but as I have disagreed with the author elsewhere, I think lukaku still needs time before he can lead the line for Chelsea, either as a lone forward or supporting striker, yes his hold up play, ball control and pressing ability are suspect and poor, it needs a year or two before he can sort it out and sadly we can't wait for him as it is already showed by mourinho in the transfer market while signing experienced players and no prodigy, mourinho IMO is in a bullish mood and wants to win something, if Costa gets injured am I comfortable with lukaku leading for a few weeks? hell no, top elite clubs in Europe have at least two world class strikers in their ranks where if one gets injured the other would slot in seamlessly as it happened with PSG and man city notably with united too when they missed van persie, lukaku should be encouraged to stay in the club's own terms as the 3rd striker and another striker brought in.
Desmondadonis
if he usurp them then it would be by merit not by being strong armed into playing him as a sub cos we don't want to lose him or whatever he says to the media. I just hope we find a miraculous way of getting rid of the deadwoods in the team such as demba ba and Fernando Torres, then we get another good striker to fight with lukaku as second choice, if lukaku is better then play him, cos he must've earned it
Desmondadonis
Danny Gold: Feel free to skip reading my posts if you can't digest my posts. My views are different from the author of this article. I have expressed my thoughts. Why should I let go of the issue concerning Lukaku yapping? Its not as if I am vehemently accusing him for doing something he is not doing. He is guilty of talking about Chelsea in a negative manner. I have seen enough from Lukaku and firmly believe that selling him for a Profit is the best thing that Jose and Chelsea can do. You, I, the author of this article and none of the VC members are a part of Jose's inner circle and Chelsea board. We can only Speculate. Lets see what decision Jose and Chelsea's board decide to take. In the mean time on VC, we can continue engaging in a Debate. Apart from referring to Lukaku as a Ping Pong Bat a couple of times, I have not thrown personal insults at him. All my criticisms of him are based on Facts and Stats. If you Disagree with me then counter my arguments with Facts and Stats. I am more than happy to engage in a civil debate with you.
StamfordDLion
Good Posts There Desmond.
StamfordDLion
solid7: Solid Argument. Good Post. I am also not buying into this Lukaku Hype. As you rightly said, there are other players in our squad.
StamfordDLion
Is it asking the impossible that people who claim to be Chelsea fans , could do something that is particularly for most peple in society ... and actually GROW UP and stop acting like inane school kids....in fact i know some school kids who show more maturity than people on here ... GROW UP or go support Liverpool
Blue_Mel
particularly easy for most people*
Blue_Mel
why does being a football fan especially anonymous ones causes people to shave off about 3/4 of their age in their mental capacities?
Blue_Mel
Its simple ... recognise that that football is mainly about peoples opinions ..some may turn out to be wrong ..some may turn out to be right .. but people should learn some humility and respect other peoples opinions as an opinion ...not shoot them down , whether its good argument or not. we are all meant to be on the same team here ... who would think so from this thread... If it was up to me .. you would all be thrown in the "Naughty pit" until you could learn how to behave
Blue_Mel
Respect saber, you obviously spent a fair amount of time compiling this article, but all I see is a whole bunch of excuses on his behalf. He may be able to score a goal, but still not skill-full enough for Chelsea. The only valid point is to use him as super-sub after Costa has worn the opposition defence down. Do you really think Lukaku will be happy with that??!!
BlueABS
Well done @saber, well written... on point! I have raised similar arguments in the past few weeks but decided to avoid any further debate on Lukaku as I discovered that some guys here just want to hate on Lukaku and nothing is going to change that, not even if he scores 1000 goals a season. I don't think Lukaku has done anything unforgivable or that should call for this level of hatred, to the extent that his haters will go to any extent to downplay his quality. They've even called him a donkey... ridiculous! No one is saying Lukaku should be our 1st choice but he has done enough to get a chance as the 2nd choice...
Latunvic
It's not 'hate', it's opinions
BlueABS
With this article,I think if any club ever bids 400million euros for saber we should take the money, take a look at the bidders, fling the money in their faces and scream ''Never!''.Priceless response, saber.Applause! I think with this,if anyone still harps about Lukaku this or Lukaku that,...then something is wrong then
Samy-chim
Excellent article Saber. Very well written, clear reasoning and persuasive arguments but i dont agree with everything you have written. As you probably realize i am one of those who also believe in the Krakens ability and potential..i have written an article about this myself though certainly not as eloquent as yours. The area of my concern especially in the last few weeks however is the young mans attitude and constant yapping..especially to the media. History is filled with many talented players who because of lack of basic discipline never reached their true potential and i hope that Lukaku does not end up that way. I agree with you Saber that the chelsea should extend his contract but all the chatter i have heard is that a contract extension has been offered to Lukaku for quite some time now..well before the world cup began and that he has declined to sign for whatever reason (either because he wants a great pay which is fine or because he really wants us and is looking and witing for a better offer from somewhere else). I also disagree with you that Lukaku actually wants to play for us..i no longer have that impression and i also have serious doubts that at this point Jose even wants him on the squad. You also made rather light of some of the recent things he said..the problem is if those were said in the heated moment of an argument between team mates in the locker room no problem but when you say those kind of things out to the media and they get transmitted world wide the consequences are not minor. Saber you will agree just as you hinted somewhere that Jose is a disciplinarian..he wants his players to tow the line of team first and thus far Lukaku hasnt shown that persona..not for chelsea and frankly not for Belgium either. He is happy when he is in the spotlight and limelight but once he is not he is petulant..yes is he is just 22 but so are players like Neymar, James Rodriguez, Oscar. Players like Origi, Schurrle are of comparable age and show much more maturity. You talked for example of Costa and Lukaku being a one two punch for us and i also hoped and dreamt of that but Lukakus comments regarding Costa have not exactly been complimentary. Costa has just come back from his home country as the most hated man there and he had a poor world cup..he has a strong psyche but what he needs coming to a new club is to feel wanted and welcome..Lukakus petulant response certainly was not what was needed. El nino for all his faults on the other hand struck the right note of welcoming the new comer even though the guy is certainly going to take his starting spot..that is what a team player does. In summary if Lukaku is to have a future with us he will need to learn to shut his trap and let his performance on the pitch do his talking, he will need to grow up and show he has the stomach and skin to compete for and earn his spot on the team, he will need to show commitment to the good of his team as his first pursuit rather than personal glory, he will need to sign a contract extension pronto and show by that, that he actually sees a future for himself at chelsea FC rather than using us a shopping stall to market himself elsewhere. He will need to re-earn the respect and trust of his Chelsea team mates, his manager and our board because i can assure you with his recent behaivor he has lost it..i just hope his recent actions and deeds have not burnt the bridges beyond repair. If however that has already happened i absolutely agree with you we must not sell him to any team in the BPL ( surely people remember how the Mata and Sturridge messes ended up) and we need to sell him to a team that has more money than common sense so we can make an absolute killing on the deal. I would be so bold to say based on the numbers being bandied for other strikers out there that we should not accept any offer less than 35mil poundsl and should be trying to pull of another bonanza sale like we did for Luiz if the decision is made by our decision makers to sell him. All in all well done Saber..i hope there will be more civil reasoned discussions on this matter like your article engenders rather than the childish prattling that has dominated discussion on the issue here on VC.

@samy-chin - " I think with this,if anyone still harps about Lukaku this or Lukaku that,...then something is wrong then" --- Spoken like a true mouth breather. Don't ever try to invalidate differing opinions with that kind of idiocy. It doesn't show what other don't know, it simply shows your willingness to let others do your thinking for you.
solid7
@GabeU, I disagree with your view that Lukaku doesn't want to play for Chelsea. I in fact think his desire/zeal to play for Chelsea is what makes him overreact sometimes. What would make a young guy who was so happy about signing for his dream club change his mind within 2 years and decide he no longer want to play for that club he loved so much he cried for. Did Lukaku complain when he was sent to the U21 team? No! Schurrle, Oscar, Hazard, Neymar etc.. were not sent to the reserve/U21 league and so are not in the same situation as Lukaku. They probably will do similar things if thrown into the same situation. I don't think anyone at CFC or any of our players has come out to say they are not happy with Lukaku because of his comments. They probably aren't even bothered about it... and there's no need to try to read their minds. Let's not find a reason to castaway another talent because of our impatience and inability to tolerate rising young CFs...

Samy-chim: So this author's opinions is like God's commandments?
StamfordDLion
Chelsea players who are already in the first team won't be bothered with Lukaku Right Now. Who knows where he will end up in the near future? He might not be a Chelsea Player in the near future. BUT a Whining, Moaning, "Me First" Player whose latest transgression was pushing away and refusing to shake the Belgium manager's hand when he was substituted, will Potentially Rock the Boat and get in the nerves of some of his team mates if he joins the first team squad.
StamfordDLion
"You know Chelsea: every year they buy a new top striker," he said. "I have to play a good World Cup. That's very interesting for all the players looking for a transfer, and I must be one of them. Chelsea know my point of view." Romelu Lukaku "I remember me coming into the dressing room last year and seeing Samuel Eto'o and Demba Ba and going: 'Whoah! What's happening here?' "But no problem. Many clubs are interested in me and at this stage I have to look to myself. "I have to play a good World Cup. That's very interesting for all the players looking for a transfer, and I must be one of them. Chelsea know my point of view."

StamfordDLion
@Stamford... that's how almost every player respond to questions on transfer interest. Okay, who do you expect him to say?

Almost every player? Players who are committed to a club will shoot down any suggestions or rumours of transfer/transfer interests. Some players will say that they have a contract and are not thinking about moving.

StamfordDLion
That's not possible for players on loan and who don't even know where they will be playing tomorrow. You expect him to say he's not thinking of moving when he has already moved (on loan) twice.
Latunvic
Kenneth Omeruo said the above mentioned words while he was on loan to Middlesbrough FC. He was also out on Loan like Lukaku.
StamfordDLion
Why blame Chelsea for sending Lukaku on loan to Everton last season? Did Lukaku himself push for a loan move at the 11th hour of the Transfer Window?
StamfordDLion
Since joining Chelsea, Omeruo has been on Loan to 2 different clubs just like Lukaku. 1) ADO Den Haag 2) Middlesbrough

lol stamford
saber
lol stamfordDlion u seriously do hate lukaku with a passion. but please be objective. u sound more like a jilted lover than someone who has real issues with him
saber
a lot of big players and even small ones flirt with clubs during windows. even the most loyal players like drogba, terry, lampard, gerrard considered moving at diferent points of their career. and a lot of players talk the exact same language as lukaku did. this is hardly a reason to hate on him
saber
by your logic eto'o fabregas etc should never have been signed. and any player whoever spoke out of turn is a disaster waiting to happen
saber
when it comes to footballing decisions childish emotions abd petty hate for small things are hardly taken into account by clubs or managers
saber
its one thing to criticise a player that he wont fit in to the team or he isnt good enough to be in a team and another to use all ur time to systematically assassinate a players character

StamfordDLion
thanks kaku. i mean talk of obsession lol
saber
@stamford - expand ur worldview. stop getting all emotional and worked up. and realize neither roman nor jose give a tosh about players giving interviews. and they certainly wouldnt sell hazard cos he flirted with PSG. thats just IMMATURE AND A CHILDISH WAY TO RUN A CLUB
saber
@Stamford, you've got your own oppinion, and others have theirs. When I say there's a problem doesn't mean yours is wrong, but maybe that there's a problem in saber's theory that you don't agree with. Attimes,I don't know even where to start addressing your posts about this issue that I just keep mum. I see that even when your arguements are addressed and dealt with, you still keep repeating them all over again...If you check past threads, alot of what saber had talked over in this article had been suggested in some way by yours trully ,though, in bits and pieces or in some different way than his. But you still keep reasserting the same points he has tackled. The way you're sounding,if you were a Monaco fan you would call Lukaku an imp for wanting to play for Real Madrid, when he has even been a money-guzzling regular for Monaco not a loanee.
Samy-chim
@saber had just opined that such words are usually agent-advised statements.A boy who has been loaned out twice, and no strong assurances given about his future yet? Common man! Put yourself in the guys shoes for once.I've said before that there was a time Lukaku lamented that for months he got no word from Chelsea or Mou,imagine yourself in that scenario man. Most times it's clubs who arrange a meeting with a player not the player. If the club has been silent, and you want assurances,or an improved contract,or outright sale what else would you do? Do you blame Courtois for having wanted out of Chelsea in the past without some strong, even public ,assurances. There were times some fans here lambasted Courtois for demanding more assurances or claiming he feels more loved at AM.
Samy-chim
left to you a lot of players would be sold for whimsical reasons
saber
Selling Lukaku would be the biggest mistake Mourinho has made in his managerial career. I love the lad and hope he has a great season for us. Don't be surprised when he proves to be the difference between Argentina and Belgium. The future is bright, the future is blue...

if stamford was the in emenalos place we would sell hazard lukaku courtois oscar and many more . we would have sold lampard when he was in his peak as well. we would have sold carvalho and drogba when they requested a move. talk about shooting urself in the foot
saber
selling players for such reasons is just childish stamford. and it would be devastating for the club in the long run
saber
The suggestion of me wanting players who talk Negative about Chelsea to be sold or given the Malouda treatment because of Only Emotional Reasons sounds funny to me. Yes, I admit that I want players to be shipped because of emotions BUT the reason why I want them to be shipped is because of "Principles" . Principles and not only Emotions.
StamfordDLion
it would eff us up. every time an agent wants to make money he'll get his chelsea player to flirt with a club knowing that our technical director stamfordDLion will sell him immediately
saber
everytime a player is depressed or temporarily unhappy with the club he would get sold for saying so. drogba wouldnt have won us the CL had we sold him for sulking and wanting to move many years back
saber
@Stamford,I respect people and their views,I respect yours too,but I think(impercetible to you) that you are a bit sliding down to the underworld of those so-called trolls and backbiters you are used to detest. This is not an insult at you, just a suggestion.Am not scared of you,you don't know me or what I look like. And I don't even know which slum or mansion of the world you reside in.But for the good of Chelsea and the game, please I'ld like you to sit down and ponder over this newfound quest of yours to discredit everything Lukaku. You've stated your view about Lukaku and I guess it's ideal we all watch the turn of events.Nothing anyone says here can affect the decision of the club.So are we heading anywhere with all this? The way I see this,I begin to wonder if after all this drama and hullabaloo Lukaku finally stays at Chelsea and plays well and earns an important place in the squad, and where that would leave you and your supporters. If a madman steals your dress while you bath and you chase after him in the streets, people would only recount seeing two 'mad people' running in the street and not one naked sane one. You've made your point about Lukaku, and frankly it's nauseatingly boring to me to daily pop into any VC thread without finding a post or two about Lukaku, most of them coming from a certain cliche of people.Isn't it tiring to you too. This is a Lukaku thread,I know, and it warrants your oppinion, but in past threads you mentioned that though Costa hasn't played a single game for Chelsea or th EPL at all you've labelled him Chelsea's number one striker, when you had always claimed Lukaku has to earn his place by playing for Chelsea.Do you see fairness even in your own words? Common man,we're all better than all these
Samy-chim
(I've said before that there was a time Lukaku lamented that for months he got no word from Chelsea or Mou,imagine yourself in that scenario man.) Lamented in the Media or behind closed doors with Jose in Private?

I keep telling some people here to be real... Footballers are humans like us, expecting them to be super humans is just not real. We all love Chelsea, but we need to face the fact about life sometimes. These young players are fighting for their careers and have their own aspirations/ambitions... They love and want to play for Chelsea but won't ruin their careers because they love Chelsea. This is their profession; their career... Footballers seek job satisfaction just like any normal professional does.

maybe we should sell the best young keeper in the world and already top 4 keeper courtois as well by ur logic
saber
One can argue that they could have sold Suarez for a sum upwards of 50 million. With that kind of money, one can argue that they may have been able to get a good striker to play along with Sturridge. No one knows how things would have panned out. We can only speculate.
StamfordDLion
note - the guy wants to sell hazard because PSG was interested in him and his wife likes paris and hazard didnt shout out loud and say he will love chelsea and never leave
saber
Please provide quotes from Drogba and Lampard. Quotes where they have criticised Chelsea like Lukaku has.
StamfordDLion
the 50 million they would have gotten from selling suarez doesnt guarantee them anything. look at tottenham. moot point is you would have effed up their chances of being in the CL by selling ur best player and best bet to finish top 4 all over ur ego
saber
question- we should have let united sign fabregas??
saber
sorry. criticing the club is taking it a bit too far. he didnt directly say anything about the club or its fans.
saber
note - I said that no player is bigger than Chelsea and that we shouldn't be held for ransom. If Hazard is intent on moving to PSG and hands in a written transfer request, he is free to go if PSG pays us "Gareth Bale Type of Money" I said that we should sell him for a Profit. No point trying to keep a Disruptive Player who might stink the squad.
StamfordDLion
The 50 million or more that they would have gotten for Suarez might have enabled them to buy players who may have helped them to get them in the Top 4. Just because Spurs messed up doesn't mean Pool would have also messed up.
StamfordDLion
There are two schools of thought regarding this Lukaku issue & both schools have produced great points to support their manner of reasoning. I'm actually indifferent in this case, & I'll support whatever Mourinho decides. You guys should quit second guessing him because we don't really know what his final decision would be. Based on contributions to the arguments, McQuinnChels doesn't belong to either of the schools, he is a dropout!
Louis Lancuv
Suarez is clearly Pool's best player and they don't have other players who are good Unlike Chelsea. Our squad is stronger than Pool and we are getting stronger. Hazard is our best attacking player but we are getting/have players who are quality. Our situation and Liverpool's is different.
StamfordDLion
I was actually hoping Jose/Chelsea would trying to get KOKE. But I respect Jose's decision to get Cesc. Cesc has been making the right noises after joining Chelsea. My stance with him is the same. If he starts talking about Chelsea in a negative way, I will be calling for him to be shipped out.
StamfordDLion
(They way I see this, don't be surprised to see that just like Hazard's statement about Chelsea not playing football,Jose comes out and downplays Lukaku's statements, the 'so-called facts') When that happens, you can include this post in the ongoing discussion.

Jose allowed Mata and KDB to be sold in the same transfer window. Jose may even sell Lukaku.

(This is a Lukaku thread,I know, and it warrants your oppinion, but in past threads you mentioned that though Costa hasn't played a single game for Chelsea or th EPL at all you've labelled him Chelsea's number one striker, when you had always claimed Lukaku has to earn his place by playing for Chelsea.Do you see fairness even in your own words? Common man,we're all better than all these) With all due respect, only a blind man can't see that Jose will start next season with Costa as his main man unless the other strikers in the squad dislodged him from the starting eleven by playing really well. Even if Costa and Lukaku are in the squad, Costa will start the season as the main striker. Lukaku has to dislodge him. You have to remember that Costa scored 36 goals for Atletico last season and help Atletico to become La Liga Winners and CL Runners Up. Most Importantly, one has to remember that Costa is a Jose "BUY" Jose didn't ask for Chelsea to buy Lukaku.
StamfordDLion
@saber - sorry, mate, but you can't write a controversial article, and then request that anybody with a differing opinion not comment on it. You wrote the article, now OWN IT. Live with the criticism. If you're just writing articles to have praise heaped upon you, and be validated by those that agree with you, then you might wish to choose a different angle. SDL did NOT hijack your thread. You, yourself, invited the comments. I can't understand how you can expect your own opinion and commentary to trump those of everyone else. That is a totally wrong thought process!

The tone of much of this thread is rather sad..i guess Lukaku has become the new Mikel. Anyway Sept 1 isnt too far of..we will all know soon enough what Jose and our board really feel about the guy. I just hope that when that decision is made whichever direction it goes our VC family can close ranks and get past all this childish personal back and forth and insults. As for me i am ready to accept whatever decision they make in good faith. Much as i would like the guy to remain with us, grow on the pitch and in temperament, if they decide to move in a new direction i will stay firmly hitched to the Chelsea FC bus and Lukaku will be just another youngster who simply did not cut it with us. We all know that that list is long and extensive. Cheers everyone.

Again saber, you are making excuses on behalf of Lukaku. Using Eto'o, Fabregas, Rooney as comparisons to excuse Lukaku's behaviour. As for Michael Owen, what did he do once he hit his 20's. You have a very persuasive writing style, and no wonder many here think you a VC Chelsea god, but to go out and try to take apart Stamford's posts, in a similar fashion to McQ (without the swearing and out-and-out insults), but calling them childish and anded to grow up, shows a distinct lack of class, and furthermore exonerates the biggest child on this site (you know who you are). I assume you write the article to promote debate, not just glowing testimonies, but then you use similar tactics to McQ to dispel any detractors. As I have said to McQ in the past, that's lame, very lame.
BlueABS
Desmond hits the nail on the head, Lukaku isn't ready to be Chelsea's no.1 striker, and probably not even no.2, we need another recognised world-class striker as the alternative to Costa (should he be injured or suspended). Lukaku could get into the reckoning if he fights for his place, but this whole argument about him, is that he wants to be no.1, playing week-in, week-out. Like he got at WBA / Everton. That is not going to happen at Chelsea. Unless he fights for it at Chelsea, and for Chelsea and proves himself at Chelsea.
BlueABS
Otherwise he stays out of Chelsea and proves himself as the next 100m top striker (ha! in his dreams), then he can come to Chelsea and dictate no.1 selection rights.
BlueABS
Why bother posting comments and thoughts on this author's articles? He can't digest opinions that are different than his.
