No More 4-3-2-1!

No More 4-3-2-1!

After going through the transitional period and nursing our fingerlings, we kick start the season, and our 'toothless tigers' should be ready to devour and challenge whatever comes their way.

We have a tactically complete manager who can sharpen our tigers' teeth to be readied for 'destruction'. He has done it everywhere he has been including his first stint at the Bridge.

With him and his 4-3-3 formation, we rocked the PL arena in 2004 by setting a still unbroken record of 95 points and just 15 goals conceded. That was our most successful era. He used the same formation at Inter Milan but changed it to 4-2-3-1 at Real Madrid.

In his current spell, he has used the same (4-2-3-1) formation in most of our matches which was yielding inconsistent results. This may be as a result of a reliable striker and transition. Now we are in the market to polish some areas in the squad and after, what formation will you recommend to the special one?

Looking at the number of creative players we have in addition to the signing of Costa, Fabregas. (Maybe Kroos), and a threatening LB, I will want him to go attacking and this is what I believe will give us the consistent results.

4-3-3 - In this formation, Matic must be my pivot to cover the back four when the need arises. With Fabregas on the left and Oscar on the right to form a triangle, we then place Hazard on the left flank and Willian / Shurrle on the right flank with Costa up front to also form a triangle, with the full backs joining the attack. This will be the best form of attack and defend. I will prefer we use this against teams that park the bus with eleven players behind the ball.

4-2-2-2 - I will prefer we use this against tough teams like Man City, Liverpool and their friends who will attack and attack. With the back four settled, I will opt for Matic and Oscar/Ramirez at the centre, then go for Willian/Shurrle and Fabregas on either flanks and the Hazard and Costa above them. Not even magic can beat us with Courtois/Cech in-between the sticks with Azpillicueta (RB), Cahill(RCB), Terry(LCB) and probably Fillipe Luis. We may only loose with this formation when we have an anti-Chelsea referee at the centre.

What do you think Blues?

Agree with the 433. But your 4222 sounds pointless. It might as well be a 4231 because hazard cant play ST. You can only call it 4-2-2-2 if your actually playing 2 ST.

Whats wrong if we go all out to attack city huh? They dont switch tactics when playing us so why must we always be thinking of changing playing plan each time we are meeting them? We can play better than city he jose fix things up,

433 will work only when we have Azpi on RB & another pure LB, not with Ivanovic @ RB & Azpi @ LB. IMO, this was the combination which didnt help us beating the mid-table teams last season. Hope Jose rectify these points.

Against top teams, we dont need to alter our strategy. Counter attacking 4-2-3-1 will do the job, and now with deadly striker (hopeful) who can finish the chances we create, we will be the force to beat.

4-2-2-2 will be suicide against top teams like City. Too narrow, no width and exposes the fullbacks cos they will bumb forward to provide width. If you want to play this system, the 2 upfront must be deadly and clinical with their finishing and the 2 just in front of the back4 must be really good DMs to cover for the fullbacks when they bump forward.

4-3-3/4-2-3-1 are basically the same formation just played with or without the ball. the triangle in CM also plays a part either with a triangle with the pivot base or inverted triangle with just the one holding Cm and either wingers tucking in or playing wider which again comes down to having or not having the ball. think both these formations will be played in every single game this season

the 4-2-3-1 formation will still be very good for the Squad, bur we can try 4-3-3 formation.... this is my 1st comment, so glad to join the blue family. ...

4-3-3 maybe the way we are going but we'll have to see what Jose does.

The 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 setups are not the same. The wide men in the former play as wide forwards or wide support strikers and play far further on the flanks looking to score not only create goal scoring chances, while the wide men in the latter do more of creating goals and tend to combine more with the other 4 players behind the CF, this means they come inside more. Salah and Schurrle will suit the 4-3-3 more if played on the flanks while Willian and Hazard will do better jobs as wide men in the 4-2-3-1 setup.

The wide men in the 4-3-3 also cut inside but they don't do it to create but to score goals also. Ancelloti is the king of the 4-3-3, he did it with us in his double winning season with Malouda and Anelka as his wide men, we saw the best of Malouda that season as he banged in like 15PL goals. He did it with Madrid last season, with Bale and CR7 as his wide men, they banged in loads of goals.

The 4-3-3 setup can be exciting tbf, but I don't think we have quality in that wide forward role as Hazard, Salah, Willian and Schurrle are no where near clinical enough.
