Know what you are getting...

Know what you are getting...

As the dust settles on the transfer of Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid to our beloved Chelsea, I thought it wise to highlight a few of his strengths and weaknesses that I've seen over the past two seasons as I`ve watched him.

1. Finishing - The guy is a lethal finisher, a fox in the box. He can score with left foot, right foot and has a good heading ability. He scores most of the goals from the 18 yard box.

2. Brute Strength - He is not a physical specimen like king DD but he is strong, direct and can be irritating to opposition defenders at times. This makes him suffer many fouls and of course he responds by fouling a lot.

3. Movement - His movement in and around the 18 yard box is phenomenal, He has this knack of being at the right place at the right time. We will need this a lot when teams park the bus.

4. High pressing - He presses opposition defenders high up the pitch which does not allow them to settle and dictate play from deep. He has stamina and fights for every ball.

5. Heart - The guy simply does not take NO for an answer. He plays with both legs and a heart that is interested in winning or nothing else. He is very hungry for goals, points and trophies.

1. Discipline - Because of his will to win at all cost, he is most of the times ill tempered and goes into verbal and sometimes contact disagreement with opposition players and even referees. With the hate for our dear club, he better tone that down.

2. Link Up play - The days of king DD has made us used to balls from Cech to the chest of the big man and from there to the net. Costa is not that type of player that has good link up play. He is adept to running into spaces. Except we change our style of play, He needs to buckle up or...

3. Pace - He is not slow but does not have blistering pace either. This eliminates the breakaway runs of Torres in matches the opposition is set to keep a highline defence. What he misses in pace he makes up in timing His runs though.

4. Long rangers - Almost 90 percent of His goals this past season came from the 18 yard box. He does not even try long range shorts very often this makes it hard for us to park the bus often. With the exit of Lampard and Luiz, only Schurrle (most times inaccurate) and Matic could release bullets from 25 yards and beyond.

With these, is his signing worthwhile or just another accident waiting to happen?

You can add what you feel are his strength and weaknesses though. I did not watch him more closely till last season.

When teams park the bus, we don't need him to be outside the 18yard box. His link up play is good but I expect him not to look for teammates too much which I find refreshing. He will be more focused on getting the ball in the net himself, which is a good thing in this Chelsea lineup. His discipline is alright. He talks and confronts a lot, but he doesn't go over the edge and is not outright dirty player although he is very irritating at times.

Ill disciplined just a bit but at least he won't feed on somebody's flesh.
16/07/2014 13:11:00
@Botum can you say the same of Lukaku?
16/07/2014 13:31:00
I share your sentiments under the subject of discipline but i don't think i agree with the link up play part. I am of the believe he knows how to bring his teammates into the game and seeing as he has played out wide before i don't think it can be considered as his weakness. Cech hoofing the ball to Drogba is an outlet (i am of the believe you've also seen cech also do the same with Iva) and drogba holding unto the ball and playing in his teammate is link up play.

Long rangers are part of his game he can improve on and while he really doesn't have pace, they hardly ever displace him off the ball when he gets into position

Agree with points @Kola, I watched only a handfull of His game though.

Good Article. I will have to disagree with you on the link up play thingy, he likes running into spaces but when the need arises his link up play is equally good. He combines really well with the other players and is heavily conscious of everyone and everything around him. I am sure of this because I have really watched him closely.

that's alright @Samex, my bad...
16/07/2014 15:24:00
Lol. Great article though. Enjoyed it. You should do one each for Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis. Will be expecting it...

Luis is on 60k per week Btw.

@Killerpass, Lukaku doesn't have discipline issues. Not that i've seen. The only problem he has is that he likes talking and thus creating controversy. He won't feed on someone's flesh too and i believe he'll be a great player as he grows.

When he squared up to JT in the Champions League I said I was pleased to see that aggression & that John probably welcomed it in a potential future team mate. And guess what, our captain has said just that today. Now let's hope the weight of his salary doesn't mar his performances as has happened with too many recent Chelsea strikers, perhaps we pay them in gold coins & they take to the pitch with them in a money belt around their waste? It would explain a lot.

@SameX, at Atletico or Chelsea?
17/07/2014 07:12:00
At Chelsea.

17/07/2014 09:25:00
Nice write up...pls do one for the other signings, love the format.
17/07/2014 15:03:00
Nice piece... Thanks
