The Return of Drogba

Is it a case of no smoke without fire?

The drum-roll heralding the anticipated return of a certain Didier Drogba is getting louder and louder.

Numerous news sources are inferring that Jose Mourinho is very keen to bring Didier back to Stamford Bridge and that the Special One feels it is something that could very well happen.

Apparently, Drogba will be offered a one-year playing deal with the option to move into a coaching role next season.

It`s reported that having lost the influence of Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, Mourinho is looking towards the inspirational qualities that the 36 year-old Ivorian possesses.

However, it should be mentioned that there are other offers on the table from other clubs.

But like I said, is this a case of no smoke without fire?

For sure, he will feature in only 5-10 games this season, maybe a dead rubber in Champions league Group stage or where the Champions league game going to follow with a Difficult League game. Its a good initiative as he is going to move into coaching role and needs to have certain linkup with the squad as well. P.N. : Here the Coach and the management and the board knows better that all of us..!!! So Be happy with what we are getting !

Look @ pirlo he is still performing good with the confidence he has so if the coach and the board decided to bring him back we should just wait and see. To bamford even if drogba comes he can still have some playing time.

@dwonder thats so hilarious,i wonder how pessimistic i'll be about stopping a goal from going if i were to be one of the defender facing those three bullies. But his arrival doesn't have anything to do with bamford though as he will be loaned out again since he is still behind costa, torres and lukaku, how do we then expect him to stay and have playing time.

Silly season I know, but this has the ring of truth to it. Could be as an occasional fourth striker, so let's not jump to conclusions about the impact on younger players. He can only be a positive influence. Lukaku for one has a lot to learn from him!

It's a very dicey thing the returning of Drogba to the bridge. The board and jose seems to have struck a lightbulb and more clarification is needed to see what the idea they have up their sleeve is. Until it becomes clearer what the concept is and how our striking department would end up as, i remain on the sideline.

Ideally if we can offload Torres, Drogba would be a good fit for the third striker slot. Lets face it. he would be behind Costa and Lukaku without hankering for starting shirt every time. he can afford to concentrate both Lukaku and Costa on the EPL and CL assault while drogba can help out as the case arises.( injuries or fatigue) he would get to start in some games like the fa and carling cups with Lukaku been second striker and Costa rested for other games. Ideally, we need someone with the mien of Demba Ba but equally deadly when called upon to do the business. Drogba ticks all the boxes. Young Bamford can go on a year loan and come back to take Drogba's spot next year.

Guys i think this is happening and if truly Atletico are trying to take Torres off our book then Drogba's move makes more sense. Costa Lukaku and Bamford while drogba is on standby incase we need him while he also can nurture players like Lukaku and bamford. The huge pay of Torres will also be off our books

After the peerless Zola the Droga is the Chelsea player i hold in the greatest regard. That said the only way i can see this as being the right move is if he is coming as player coach in a 4 striker squad because age has clearly caught up with him and his minutes will be very limited. That said he ability with free kicks, PKs and his aerial ability on attack and defence will always be there. My greater excitement is that Drogs is Lukakus footie mentor..if there is anyone in the world who can get that boys mindset, attitude and priorities pointed in the right direction it is the Drogs. He will also doubtless be able to pass on a career worth of valuable tricks to the trade to Lukaku and Bamford...they will only be better for his tutelage. I would hope for a 4 striker band of Costa, Lukaku, Bamford and Drogs but i realize it will probably end up being; Costa, Lukaku, El Nino and Drogs which wont be too shabby either. By next year he would then transition to full time coaching and we will be one year closer to releasing El Nino.

Not taking anything away from Drogba, but seriously GabeU, not a mention of Lampard in that peer group?!? However, he can be great mentor and coach to our upcoming strikers, and as far as playing, well I see that as peripheral to his re-signing. Nice to have, but probably hardly going to be used, apart from maybe as a super-sub, last 10 minutes, change a game type of scenario.

I wonder what the plan is for our strike force for this upcoming season. It is clear historically that a 3 striker force within a team that plays a 1 striker system does not work. It was proved at Man City with Balotelli, Tevez and Dzeko. Only reason it worked last season was injuries to Aguero which provided Dzeko and Negredo opportunity. If Aguero had been fit, one of Dzeko, Negredo or Aguero would have left this summer. It clearly did not work at Chelsea for the long term with Demba Ba and Eto on their way out. A 3 striker system always results in one striker leaving due to lack of game time. You've got a 35-36 year old Drogba who is only good for MAX 10 games in a season (but needs more games to get to those 10 very good games); a Costa who is new to the league and club, a Lukaku who hasn't led a Chelsea line this season; and a squeezed Fernando Torres who doesn't have it anymore. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE for more than 2 of these players to get relevant game time that makes worth the long term in Chelsea. Also skeptical of these player-coach type signings. Player gets bored and retires and walks away to another team. He should take proper coaching if he really wants to get into this business or go to the MLS and make some real money and still be relevant as a player.

@Kaku - that's probably why he is coming back as a squad member, he can take his coaching badges at the same time. He can't be appointed as an out-and-out coach until he has his badges. Nothing to stop him mentoring though, which could be priceless if it works out.

With both Torres and Lukaku only having 2 years on their respective contracts, then it's by no means certain that either will still be with Chelsea on 01/09/14. By some accounts, Lukaku has refused a contract extension, no doubt he wants 'those' assurances, and Torres is too well paid, why give it up. But just as easily, these two might consider pastures anew, one because he wants regular first team action and no.1 spot, the other because he might need a new challenge to kick-start a revival. Hmmm, good luck to both with that, both going will allow the likes of Bamford a chance to move up. Alternatively another top notch striker with Drogba third and we would be really set to go.

Honestly Kaku i fail to see how you can say the City model is a model of failure. To begin with they typically play 2 striker formations anyway not one striker formations. Furthermore they have had 4 top tier strikers each season for the last 5 yrs and won two BPL titles; certainly more than we have over this same period with our one striker formations. They let go of Tevez and Ballo not because of playing time issues but because of extracurricular stuff and they made sure to get replacements for both while ensuring they did not strengthen their BPL rivals by selling them within the league. ManU have had 4 strikers on the books for years and their trophy haul speaks for itself. I dont know where it is written in stone that Chelsea must play one striker formations all the time and btw the last time we won the BPL and the times we have won it before then we always had at least 3 above average goal scorers in our first team whether you want to call them wingers, forwards, strikers or wing forwards (and that does not include the added input in all those three instances from the rampaging Frank Lampard ghosting in from midfield). Anyway we will see what Jose and the board decide..i am sure Drogs himself knows his playing career is in its twilight and i doubt he needs MLS money..having bit part playing chances while studying for his coaching badges and mentoring our younger up and coming strikers may well suit and appeal to him better than looking for one more big pay day (especially after how his Chinses misadventure turned out). We know he wont be earning a big day coming to us for a 1 yr deal..if he accepts our offer and is added to the three named strikers we have on the books already from my view it is a win-win situation.

Seriously speaking for a team that plays one striker formation, the ideal number of strikers you should have is 3,2 capable of playing week in week out and 1 who can add depth and other options in case of injuries ( either a youngster or a player in the twilight of his career) played as much games as he did because we didn't have a definite first choice and a definite second choice striker, jose kept trying all the options available to him..when you play 1 striker upfront having another as 2nd choice is ideal and having a 3rd one is because of the possibility of casualty and depth, except we are changing to a 2 striker formation, having 4 strikers won't be feasible...most teams who play a 1 striker formation in football usually have 2 or at most 3 strikers(with one either a youngster or a player who is close to retirement)...beleive it or not, there is no way you can keep 4 strikers or even 3 top strikers happy when you play a 1 striker formation,if we are changing to a 2 striker formation then having 4 strikers will be ideal but with the amount of AMF's that we have got,i don't see us switching to a 2 striker formation...

@Hazard,..i agree entirely with your post. Personally i think we have too many CAMS/AMF and play too many at a time. I would prefer we play more two striker formations akin to City and ManU but that is a discussion and argument for another day and discussion thread. The point for me is that if Drogs is coming i am fine with it as long as he knows and understands that he will be no 4 in a 4 striker band. I dont want him taking one of our three striker spots if we only have 3 strikers especially if another one of those three spots is occupied by el nino..that scenario would not be good news at all.

How bad will it be? Worse than mandzukic, muller and pizarro (same age as drogba)that bayern used last year or worse than the benzema and morata?...if the first and 2nd choice strikers are able to deliver when called upon then drogba as the 3rd choice striker will be perfect and okay..the only issue is the sale of torres will be very difficult except we are looking to loan him or sell him the way city did to adebayor..if not i'd have said a costa, lukaku, drogba strikeforce is very okay for us but torres is still very much around..anyway the club knows better but one thing is certain, our strikeforce this season will be an upgrade to that of last season and I don't see us having more than 3 strikers irrespective of if drogba comes or not..

The point is it is not possible to have 3 strikers play for more than one season in a one striker system. Bayern has 4, but remember Mueller is not am out and out, but plays as a supporting striker alongside Mandzukic or Lewandowski. The best framework is 2 pure 9s and another forward capable of playing as a 9 e.h. Schurrle. Any plan of 3-4 is wasting 2 players time who will be inkling to leave by January and for sure leave by the summer.

Kaku....were we playing lone striker because we preferred it or because we were forced to? IMHO we had major issues with our CAMs last season in that they are not flexible enough to play in any other system other than a 4-2-3-1. Although we have Andre who can play as a winger and second striker Eden, Oscar, Ramires and Willian were not effective as wingers. And even then Andre as a winger and or second striker failed to gel with whoever was the striker be it Eto, Ba and or Torres. Our players can not give you the tactical flexibility to play a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2. I can't even see Eden as an effective second striker providing adequate support to Diego and neither can I see him playing winger in a 4-3-3 situation. same goes for Rami, Oscar and Willian. I pointed it out last season. Willian, Ramires and Oscar's flexibility are towards the middle as CM/DMs and not out on the wing and supporting a striker whereas Eden is just a lone player kind of. Although Eto could play as a second striker, the problem was both Ba and Torres were just out of sync with everyone. There was one game where Andre was so frustrated with Ba last season.

But I think the missing point is not really what we are discussing and thats leadership upfront! So far we do not have anyone who can make everyone else around them listen up and play according to how they want the ball!
