England Captain - Gary Cahill?

Former England captain Steven Gerrard, 33, called time on his England career on Monday following an embarrassingly bleak and colourless captaincy at the World Cup in Brazil where he led The three Lions to secure two defeats and a draw in what was arguably the country's worst ever showing at a World Cup, as he announced his international retirement in steep anticlimax.

And as though everyone couldn't wait for the Liverpool man to make way, three candidates - Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart and Gary Cahill - were immediately put forward, with the name - #Cahill trending on Twitter ahead of the other players as the solid centre back garnered majority of the early votes.

Although nothing yet official from Roy Hodgson or The FA concerning Gerrard's replacement, for many tweeters #Cahill is a definite choice by default owing to the dearth of quality alternatives on the entire Three Lions set-up.

Here's a few you might enjoy digesting(as culled from 101 Great Goals):

Gary Cahill the only choice for next England captain, for me. — Massimo Marioni (@MassMarioni) July 21, 2014

The best choice for @england captain has to be @GaryJCahill. Good professional, gonna start every game. Will grow into the role over time. — Andy Burton (@imandyburton) July 21, 2014

captain tells you all you need to know about the dearth of options available. — Mark Buckingham (@MABuckingham) July 21, 2014

My choice from those available now would be Gary Cahill to be next England captain — Ian Abrahams (Moose) (@BroadcastMoose) July 21, 2014

Gary Cahill or Joe Hart for captain. Had enough of prima- Donna England captains, that rules out Rooney. — ParkedTheBus (@ParkedTheBus) July 21, 2014

I feel Gary Cahill is the ideal choice to replace Stephen Gerrard as the new England captain. — Minister ÖF Arsenal (@SirJohnnyKay) July 21, 2014

What has the England national team come to when people think GARY CAHILL should be captain — Teague Calvin (@TeagCalv) July 21, 2014

So fellow Blues, although like most of you I really couldn't care less what the Scouser captain - who apparently enjoys this very healthy and commendable symbiotic relationship with Chelsea strikers as he has since developed the knack of involuntarily feeding them with 'assits' at every given opportunity into an art form - does or doesn't with his remaining days, what do you reckon regarding this development?

Would The FA swallow pride and suddenly become sensible even for a splitting second, kill the unfunny joke and go with the popular demand by handing the famous armband to John Terry's defensive partner who is, by the way, the least experienced of the 'nominated' three?

Time alone will tell though something in me wants to hope not... But how about you?

i don't agree with a keeper being the captain under any circumstances! Rooney has shown time and time again he has a hot head. That leaves Cahill!

Gary Cahill has the best character of the lot, by a substantial margin. I would concede that point even if I weren't a Chelsea fan.
solid7
Couldn't stop Suarez.
foreign_viewer
stopping suarez is a one man job mr. Foreign viewer

*is not*

Does not matter the media want Rooney and Hodgson will comply ,
Michael Reid
anybody but not rooney, he is not worth it
smog
Definitely not Rooney, Cahill in my opinion although he needs to be more vocal in organising the team and defence.
Splint1976
Jack Wilshere is not a viable candidate. His character does not permit him to wear the armband. This is the same guy that likes to flip off rival fans. Not acceptable. Theo Walcott, yes, providing he can manage to stay fit and uninjured. So no.
solid7
The day England makes Theo Walcott a captain of the National side, will be the day football ends in that country.
kolagold25
For me, Rooney for captain.
kolagold25
And yes lampard for captain whenever he plays. He hasn't retired yet as he?
kolagold25
Sorry I'm off my game today...

Suarez is one man.
foreign_viewer
Terry is the real defender at Chelsea. He hides Cahill's weaknesses.
foreign_viewer
Who really cares? The team will still be rubbish. None of the current young midfielders can and will match the output of Gerrard and Lampard. None of the current defenders will match the prowess of Terry, Ferdinand and Ashley Cole. Only the attackers have some bright future but Hodgson has no clue how to use them. Without any good defense, the team is not good enough to compete in the international stage. If I was Gary, I will be praying I am not a candidate. The whole England circus will affect his club career.
KAKUfrank
foreign_viewer, Suarez is a one-on-one specialist. Since you're obviously the expert, what defender is the bane of Suarez? I know of no defender that I would consider "excellent" in a one-on-one vs a player of that calibre. In fact, I know of no good defensive team that doesn't defend zonally. But I'm sure you know best...
solid7
Cahil is the answer.
Maza Moses
Well seems the same terry was unable to curb the weaknesses of Luiz
kolagold25
Foreign viewer: re you seriously saying cahill does nt deserve d armband cos he could nt stop suarez all alone? Or you re questioning his ability??
