Will Drogba Cut the Mustard?

Back at Stamford Bridge, for a second spell, it`ll be interesting to see if Didier Drogba can hit anywhere near the form he displayed in his first spell.

Will Drogba`s presence put the fear of god into the hearts of Premier league defences, will he continue to score crucial goals in big games and, more importantly, will he have Arsene Wenger running for the hills as he demolishes the Arsenal defence in his usual fashion?

Back in training it would appear that Jose Mourinho has no qualms about bringing the 36 year-old Ivorian back to Stamford Bridge with the gaffer remarking about the legend that is Didier,

"Didier still has the technique to score and his physical strength and presence is still the same."

"Mentally he is unchanged. Every training exercise, his desire to compete and to win is always there. He will be important for us."

So the omens look good but I suppose the acid test will come when he first steps onto the pitch in a competitive Premier League game.

What is your opinion, will Didier cut the mustard and how many games do you see the ageing striker starting?

Your thoughts would be most welcome.

He will chip in with a few, but in the last 3 years he has been far from prolific. I think he might be used as a super sub near the end of the game.

I don't think he's as lethal as he was before but at least he'll do a decent job for us when required.

he is not lethal again but carries a greater goal threat with the likes of fab, haz, willy, osc et al to provide goal scoring chances for him

*greater goal threat than torres who plays like a midfielder or best as a second striker in a 442 formation.

with costas ground ability n drogbas aerial advantage we can be pretty good with fabregas accurate passes n long passes both will have great advantage to work with him ... u will have to wait for it though ... with these two strikers every lower rank parkbus teams will pay dearly

and as for torres he is a bigger threat in champions league games n as a backup striker

Let's wait and see how it turns out. But I tink play wise, DD will do better then Torres, but goal wise they might just be similar. I'm nt saying DD will be wasteful like FT, but number of goals scored myt just be the same, say 8 league goals, is the much I expect from DD, which I can also expect from FT too. Not bad for his age, but we might need more in the running. I just pray his goals turn out to be match winners.

He was washed up when he was here before! As a result I expect him to do very little if anything! For me his signing as a player defies logic : as a coach who knows?

Well Didier is better than any of the options we had last season up front in Eto'o,Ba,and Torres. So I do believe he's still got it,maybe not as lethal, but he's still an assassin(still has the killer instinct).

He was surprise when Didi signed cos it was very pointless at the time. Can't see Didi as a player making any significant contribution to our challenge next season! He is an old man and has depreciated a lot. But its obvious Jose wants his leadership role in the dressing room and if u ask me I say that be very important! But still, Torres would ve to be shipped out(even if it means we ve to take a big financial loss, we ve money now more than ever) and sign a capable second choice striker! When Jose is sticking with Torres & Didi as Costa's backups then we better start praying that Costa stays fit all through the season! If he does, we would win the league! Very confident of that!

@Blue_Mel u ve to calm yourself! I wasn't happy to see lukaku leave but the lad wanted out and we got a very good offer! No other club would ve offered a better deal than we got. We wish him luck and move on! Would u have promised him 1st choice status if u were in Jose shoes?? And then force him to sit on the bench when another club has offered us such an amount to make him their starman? That would have been unfair on the lad! We move on by getting in a trustworthy replacement!

Hasn't been prolific over the last few years?? Who said that? Lol 11 games 8 goals at Shanghai. Then 15 goals in 37 for galatasray. So 48 games 26 goals. Yeah that's pretty crap to be honest lol the man is still knocking goals in plus his over all game is about hold up play, bullying defenders and set piece play. He never relied on pace as he has never been pacey. Drogba will do a fantastic job when called upon. Again though 26 goals in 48 games not prolific!!! Have a word.

There is something else about Didier's game that no one on here has mentioned & that is the fact that he is without doubt the best "free" defender in our own box, when we are defending a lead with 15 minutes or so to go. By free I mean not having an individual to mark but simply being given license to attack the ball when it's delivered from set pieces. Add that to the fact that against "parked buses" defenses he may just be the man to batter a way through in a 20 minute cameo off the bench.

Didier can score from free-kicks which is a big big bonus. This is what none of our strikers last season could do.

@the_blues, City fans describe Lamps signing as good for experience and some wayward Chelsea fans are making noise about Didier's signing. We are better off with Drogba than with Eto'o.

I'm hoping Drogba can contribute about 8-10 league goals although that will depend on game time. The main thing is we find goals when we are playing teams who park the bus. I know it's only pre-season but I'm getting a bit concerned about the form of Man Utd and Arsenal. Man Utd seem to be playing well and only really have the Premier League to concern themselves with. If they get on a good run I can't see them blowing it like Liverpool did. This could be one of the toughest seasons ever. Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal & Liverpool all have a realistic chance of winning the league and one of them won't even qualify for the Champions League - That's why the Premier League is the best in the world.

As long as Costa stays fit, Drogba's signing won't be bad. If Costa can give us 32/34 games fully fit this season, I see no reason why DD & Torres can't handle the rest. Considering how much Mourinho loves playing a stable 11, Costa would play almost every match. Drogba & Torres aren't his competition but his complement.
