Why Jose sanctioned the sale of David Luiz

Why Jose sanctioned the sale of David Luiz

The sale of David Luiz, to Paris St Germain, is a deal that happened before the World Cup.

Chelsea received a very handsome fee for the somewhat erratic Brazilian, a fee that dwarfed the amount we paid Benfica for the player.

But, apart from the money, why did Chelsea let the player go?

Well, as Chelsea continue their re-season tour of Europe, Jose Mourinho has revealed all, remarking to the media,

"Last season he was not a regular first-choice for us."

"As a central defender not at all, it was John Terry and Gary Cahill the whole season."

"In midfield he was a physical guy and gave us important things, especially in the Champions League when Matic couldn`t play."

"But this season Matic and play in the Champions League so we don`t lose that physicality. The fact we have Cesc Fabregas, moves us in a different direction."

"It`s something that our football needs, and we want to go in that direction."

"David did important things here, was always a good professional and we will miss him as a good guy."

"But from a football point of view, we believe our squad was stronger than it was."

Is Jose correct?

We are better off in all aspects, player-wise, financial-wise. Our team is more balanced and creative. Our strike force is improved a thousand fold and we've got a bit of profit too from the transfer activities since last year.

Geezer was a bit part player, and it made sense to cash in. We are starting to fill the holes that existed in our squad last season slowly but surely.

Understand what he is trying to say but don't totally agree imo Luiz was working well in the midfield. The game against City was a Matic and Luiz pivot. Both together had good games.

But yeah for the money I understand letting him go and buying players who have more identity in their roles.

Fabregas for Luiz in midfield? Doesn't that make more sense financially and tactically as well?

The Luiz Matic midfield was far from ideal. It was just a better option than Luiz in CB. But it still had it's issues. Given the choice of Luiz-Matic vs Fabregas-Matic for the starting place, and Van Ginkel-Matic as the secondary, who would really choose Luiz as first or second option? The only thing he added to offset his reclessness, was his dead-ball skill. That can be replaced easily.

Could be right. I just really fancied him in the midfield especially next to a DM. He also had the game against PSG second leg. I thought he was a very good mid. But as I said for 50 mill and getting more established midfielders I guess makes sense.

Jose has finally shared my sentiments about luiz in midfield. I'd always believed he was used in that regards mainly because of his agressiveness. If mikel had as much aggressiveness in him, there wouldn't have been need for him to be used there as he was always a tad erratic. Haven't said that, he was a lovely bloke to have around, very competitive player who would like to always be a starter. We can do him a world of good by not trying to slag him with his showing at the WC as our part of being blue-tinted ;)
