Fabregas - The Missing Piece!

As the pre-season programme starts to come to an end and the new season draws ever-nearer, Jose Mourinho knows that Chelsea have to be in amongst those contending for honours this season.

With a re-shaped team and with several of the old guard gone, Jose appears to be particularly happy that he managed to persuade one of his summer signing to come to Stamford Bridge.

Talking about Cesc Fabregas and his adaptability, this is what the Special One had to say,

"I always thought Cesc would be a Barcelona player because he`s so good. And being a Catalan and with the end of Xavi`s career coming, I thought he`d stay."

"But he wanted to come back to English football - a bit like me."

"Not only does he know the Premier League, he`s also not on the foreign list because of all the years he lived in England - so that was important."

"He can play as a #10 and score and #8 and give most of his game to the team - as we have Nemanja Matic as anchor-man and John Obi Mikel."

"Then we have Oscar and Willian as #10`s. Cesc is both. He`s the missing piece of our engine."

Monday 18th August and Burnley away can`t come around quick enough for me, how about you?

I absolutely agree with Jose on this. Fab is a major acquisition and his versatility and ability to play anywhere in the middle from CM to CAM to no 10 to even a false 9 will serve us well. I just feel the further forward he is for us the more we can take advantage of his incredible passing range and creative ability. At CM he fits the profile of a regista ala Pirlo but defensively there he is no Modric or Xabi and i fear that against top opposition like city, bayern or Real for example were we to pair him with Matic, Matic would get overun and so we would have to use someone line Rambo or mikel in that position with a loss in passing range and creativity from the middle of the field.

He has not done a lot in pre season, however, nor has anyone else! For me they are playing worse this pre season than any of the last 10 years! Torres and Drogs are just a joke. We need another Hazard / Robben type player and front men that actually move! The whole thing is looking laboured and predictable.

Preseason = tinker time. I'd rather find out now that something doesn't work than when it actually matters.

Exactly @Solid 7.

at least closer there. The Man U, Man City and Liverpool of this world are almost ready for the season whereas our own players are still on holidays while on the pitch...

Always said he'll be the most important part player this season. Anyone still on this preseason bandwagon should take a chill pill, its called preseason basically to get players fit and ready for the upcoming season. We've been experimenting with different strategies, and even tried the low block. Incorporation of players is a process, and I'm confident we'll be the team to beat this season.

nely - don't bother. same people, every pre-season, same non-arguments. like goldfish. people forget too quickly, or they don't bother to remember and learn at all.

Francesca- True! Not sure when a preseason game became a Cup Final.

@unclezillion - No, I don't think with 2 weeks to go, we can even remotely be ready. Evidently you are unaware that many of our first team players are only now just returning to training. (after that pesky Copa Mundial thing) So either you have a different understanding of football than I do, or you are on a different timeline. And even at that, it's also a time to do some last minute experimenting BEFORE we kick off the new campaign. Seems like pretty straightforward thinking, doesn't it?
