Courtois - New Deal!

I don`t think anyone I sunder any illusions as to who Jose Mourinho believes is his first choice keeper!

After making three consecutive starts, I think it`s fair to say that Thibaut Courtois is Jose`s preferred choice with the 22 year-old Belgian stopper set to become a mainstay of the starting eleven.

To that effect it is being reported that Chelsea are determined to tie down the keeper to a new long term deal and reports suggest that the new contract would see Courtois` pay rise form the reported £30,000 a week he`s on now to something in the region of £90,000 a week.

The gist of the articles I`ve been looking through infer that Chelsea are determined to tie the goalkeeper down and that it is sincerely hoped the new deal will be signed and in place by the end of the month.

We`ll endeavour to keep you abreast of the situation.

I wonder why it is taking too long for him to sign. This guy is not straight forward. I hope there's no blackmail around-about there.

We can't let Cech leave until Courtois signs a new 5 year contract.

90 kpw is too much, 60-70kpw would be better for now. If in two to three years time we need to still renew His contract, He might demand 120kpw and that is too much for a 25yr old goalkeeper as He could still ask for a pay rise subsequently...

Well it is imperative a new deal is signed sooner rather than later.

the gist about the whole show is that Thibaut and his agent''s plan backfired slightly when Cech refused to move from the bridge in the transfer window. I have always had this notion that he (thibaut) believed that Cech constituted a clear and present danger to his no 1 spot and that is why he and his agent instituted the press barrage about not coming back to seat on the bench or going out on another loan with assurances for the no 1 spot between the sticks. the plan worked, Cech was benched but Thibaut and his agents knew damn well that with Cech still around, they are not completely out of his shadow and it would only take one or two bad days for the tables to turn. I believed underneath all those ( I want Cech to stay stuff) thibaut said in the media, they fully expected Cech to call it quits and leave thus making him the undisputed no 1 goalkeeper ahead of Swharzer. However Cech stubbornly not leaving is now a cause for concern and i am sure they will seek assurances into whatever contract they sign for guarantees in the team. The club however is in perfect position having accede to his request and thus are pushing him to sign a new deal then they are have him tied down without any fear of his threats. Not that he is a bad goalkeeper or anything. infact i have confidience is in ability and he is clearly a better goalkeeper than Cech at the crosses.

If Cech doesn't get a game against Swansea in the league he never will. Three goals conceded against Everton isn't too impressive for any keeper playing behind a Chelsea defence.

Is it the same way cech conceded 5 against arsenal, 4 against monaco, 3 against man u, stoke etc???? Your keeper is as good as your defense, our defenders were all over the place at everton, dropping courtois because he considered 3 against everton will be the dumbest thing ever, luckily you're not the coach.Lol

Thebreeze, you talk more like a spoilt kid. Where is your football brain? Those goals can score against any keeper. However, it will be very stupid and senseless to bench a good keeper whom everybody is praying to extend his contract.

@THEBREEZE - that was not really a Chelsea defense on display against Everton. Or don't you read the headlines? If you do, what was Mourinho's #1 complaint about that match? Was it the goalkeeping?

@icebluelg - Sorry, Courtois isn't #1 in the world. That honor is held by Manuel Neuer. There are very few serious footbal fans that would dispute this. The man is in a league of his own.

People saying 90k is to much, really need to look at other clubs and how much they pay their lower ranked keepers. In all honesty with the season(s) he has had i thought he was in the 100k bracket.

People here are being blinded by sentiment and not seeing the big picture. This is not an ideal situation. Chelsea FC has had contract extension offers on the table for Courtois since at least March or april this year and still he has not signed. By January next year if he has still not signed we will be in the very dangerous situation of having two world class goal keepers with just 1.5 yrs left on their respective contracts and if Jose and the board dont play their cards right we may end up by the end of the season losing both of them. The thing is this; while courtois is in my mind the better goalie overall, while he is obviously younger and thus has a longer potential future of service it is clear of the two who bleeds blue and it is not courtois. Also let us stop with this acting like he is equal to Neuer ..he is not even close i am sorry. Two of the goals we conceded against everton (the last two) would have been stopped by some goalies i can name who are not even neuer). The point is the boy is not perfect..he has a lot of growing to do in the departments of ball distribution, proper positioning and ability to stop PKs (one area that Cech is presently superior). It is true he is way better than Cech in box presence and handling of crosses and corners. Now let us ask ourselves why hasnt the lad signed a contract extension yet. In my mind there are only three possibile reasons none of which are good; 1. He is angling for more money.. if the offer on the table is already close to 100k/wk i can assure you Neuer, Casillas, Buffon etc dont earn as much..the only Gks who would earn in that territory would be Joe Hart, Sirigu at PSG and of course Cech himself..does anyone really feel Courtois at his tender age with nothing thus far achieved for chelsea deserves to start at so high a stipend? If we start him at over 100k/wk where do we go from there in a year or two when he has a few trophies under his belt? This is open blackmail and were i on the chelsea board i would call his bluff and not increase the present contract offer on the table by one penny and tell him take it or leave it. 2. He may be delaying with the intent of trying to force Cech out so he has no credible competition for the no 1 spot..If we are wise our decision makers must not fall for this. The reason is obvious..the departure of Cech would not give assurance that Courtois will sign on the dotted line..If he refuses to sign with Cech here what is to say he will sign if Cech leaves? We need to keep Cech as a fail safe at least until Courtois actually signs an extension not the other way around. 3. It may be that Courtois really has no intention of staying with us long term. His heart may still be in Spain. There is no telling what the emissaries of both the Catalans and Real may have whispered in his ears while he spent 3 years with Atletico and it is obvious that neither of these spanish giants have a settled dominant goal keeper among them. Real surely know that Casillas's end is nigh..they have Navas but he is certainly a no 2 not starting material for a club that insists on having galacticos at every position. Barca on the other hand in Bravo and De Stergen have 2 decent but not great goalies as well. For all we know Courtois may be using us as an advertising bill board to up his price for next summer should a bidding war arise between these two for his services. For sure, if he has not signed a contract extension for us by the end of this season be assured he never will and we will have to sell him. I go into all this painful detail because it is obvious that the pragmatic thing to do is to keep Cech happy..he needs to be given a few quality games here and there to keep him engaged and to make it clear to him that he may yet have a future with us. Right now Jose's open media decleration that Courtois was handed the starting position not because he was found superior to Cech at goal keeping prowess but for "the sake of the clubs future and his contract situation" is a huge disincentive for Cech to continue to apply himself and this must be rectified. Furthermore the closer we get to the january transfer window if Courtois has still not signed a contract extension Jose will be well advised to increase the number of starts granted to Cech. This is a game of brinkmanship that Chelsea FC cannot afford to lose!! We cant afford to end up losing two world class goal keepers by seasons end because of the games one of them is trying to play with our club.

He said about Cech: We dont talk about the situation, but of course I know he has played 10 years at Chelsea and that now I am playing and for him its not the nicest situation. But that is the decision of the board and the trainer. He is working hard in training to be ready when I cannot play or I am maybe not playing well. We work well together.
