Tottenham Hotspur 1 Chelsea 2

A dramatic finish, at Wembley Stadium saw Chelsea beat Tottenham to claim their first win of the 2017 / 2018 season.

With the events of the previous game, against Burnley, further reducing the players available to him, Antonio Conte sprung a couple of surprises in his starting eleven. Tiemoue Bakayoko was given his debut in midfield and Conte, despite suggesting to the contrary in his pre-match press conference, selected David Luiz in midfield.

Chelsea started the brightest of the two teams and should have taken the lead in the first five minutes when Alvaro Morata, stood between two defenders, headed a cross wide of the post.

But the away side, getting numbers behind the ball looked comfortable and were to take the lead in twenty-fourth minute when, after David Luiz had been fouled just outside the box, Marcos Alonso stepped forward to send the perfect free-kick over the wall and beyond the despairing dive of Hugo Lloris.

Unfortunately, the Chelsea goal seemed to galvanise Tottenham and Chelsea spent the remainder of the half on the back-foot. Tottenham`s best chance of scoring an equaliser came when Harry Kane saw his effort rebound to safety off the base of the post.

The second half saw Chelsea, again, forced on the back-foot and the makeshift defence showed remarkable resilience to keep Tottenham at bay. Chelsea could have doubled the lead when from a rare attacking opportunity Willian saw his shot hit the post and rebound to safety.

As the game entered the last ten minutes, the scene was set for a dramatic finale. Bakayoko was penalised for a foul on Alli and when Eriksen floated in a dangerous looking free-kick, the unfortunate Batshuayi turned it past Courtois into his own net.

It now looked a case of Chelsea hanging on for a draw but Chelsea had other ideas, Batshuayi almost got through but was stopped by an excellent tackle but in playing the ball out Tottenham were guilty of losing possession when David Luiz made an excellent interception, the ball was played out wide and there was the hero of the hour, Marcos Alonso galloping into the area to hit a shot across the goal and underneath the diving Lloris to give Chelsea the victory.

Delighted with result and in particular for Marcos Alonso. Such a underrated player and gets a lot of undue criticism from Chelsea fans. But he does his business quietly. This result may just kickstart our season.

what a game, it left me on a natural high , just Alonso so amazing , Christensen deserves to bench Cahill, Bakayoko a young Ya Ya Toure . We did this with a patched up team .

You can imagine the shape our play will take when our players are fully fit and the new ones fully adapt to the league. Up the Blues!

Can't wait for Hazard to be back. We had a couple of opportunities to break, unlike last season, we stalled. Hazard will bring that back, and Moratat will work into that as well. Brilliant win today, against all odds.

I kind of understand our pursuit of Sandro, but actually, Alonso is fantastic in an attacking sense. He only falters sometimes defensively.

What I loved about this game is that we kept Erikson almost completely quiet. This was the key.

And that was thanks to Luiz, who was paying particular attention to Erikson.

As to The Don, your game-plan was spot on. Let's not miss that, he out-witted Pochettino.

Morata will come good with hazard and Pedro returns..playing with willian isn't doing him any good...We are back in Europe, that means we are competing in 4 different trophies, ..couple with injuries, suspensions( accumulation of yellow and red cards) and fatigues and the needs for change of personnels and tactics in the long run .We definitely needs a large squad..Bakayoko is just 50% fit and Conte was forced{cesc suspended ,no alternative central midfielde} to pick him to make up the numbers...He's goona be a beast for us when fully fit...I won't mind getting Drinkwater(workaholic) and OX(utility).. Llorente(experienced target man) and a back up LWB ....Our home grown quotas are still left unfilled ,while we still have space for 3 international players..Onwards and Upwards!

Great character displayed by everyone today. Against all odds we knicked this one. Has quickly erased the blues of last week. I thought Kante, Luiz, Alonzo and AC were immense today. Upwards!!!!

The old Conte is back! All it took was getting the suit back on. Panic over for the moment. Tremendous performance from everyone. Fought for everything. Definitely not like 2 years ago as I feared. Hopefully Morata performs better when Hazard, Pedro and Fabregas are back. He struggled up from but was great in defending corners. Just shows what can happen when you play with focus and discipline. Onwards and upwards!

Everyone wrote us off, I love days like this, when we show why we won the EPL last season. Against all odds, and all biases, we won the game, and it was not a lucky win. Fair and square, we won it.

The toxic atmosphere is in the media, not the club, certainly not on the pitch anyway. This is no 2015-2016 2.0. The players are backing the manager.

Just heading home from the game, over the moon, terrific win. Christensen and Rudiger were superb at the back and Bakayoko is a powerhouse of a player, who should be fantastic when he's up to speed. Morata had a tough time and was outnumbered but he's a class act and will be a hell of a player once he finds his feet. Alonso' contribution was immense and I thought Willian caused Spurs trouble throughout on the counter attack and was unlucky not to score when he hit the post. Well done lads.

We negated their normal fluidity, call it disruptive, whatever, but it was actually quite brilliant, and Kante, Luiz and Baka, mainly , should get credit for that.

We dealt with Harry magnificently, he is the best in the world at receiving and holdup play, but he was, on the whole, ineffectual.
