Conte Gets His Reward for some Brave Decisions

Conte Gets His Reward for some Brave Decisions

The expression on the face of Antonio Conte, once victory had been sealed against Manchester United was better than a thousand words I could write.

Conte knew he`d made some big decisions today, dropping David Luiz, bringing in Andreas Christensen, recalling N`Golo Kante and pushing Cesc Fabregas further, big decisions that worked wonders.

After the game, Conte had this to say to the Sky Sports team,

'It`s an important victory. When you play against Manchester United it`s always a massive game. We know very well this team is very strong. This type of win is important for our confidence. We showed great desire and passion to win this kind of game.

"We can win or lose but our spirit must be this. Last season our spirit was in every game - we started this season with a lot of problems. We were up and down. This game showed if we want we can.'

As for his decision to drop David Luiz, when asked whether the Brazilian had a future at Chelsea, his answer possibly suggested something untoward may have gone on during the week, with Conte remarking,

"I don`t know. He has to work really hard otherwise they are on the bench or in the stand."

And on the performance of Alvaro Morata, who scored the winning goal, the Italian further added,

"Alvaro Morata showed great personality to be very strong to play in this league. There is disappointment because he could score more but today he was very good. He`s a young player but it`s great for his confidence and the confidence of Chelsea."

It`s a shame the international break has come when it is, things are, in our opinion, starting to look a whole lot rosier.

@ Uncle Merlin - David Luiz future depends on work. I just love this Conte's no nonsense approach. Luiz has been off form for a while, and Conte gave him quite a long rope to pull even though Christensen has always been ready. If Luiz (who is a senior squad member) can be given this treatment, everybody on the team will know there are no untouchables. The ball is in Luiz's court. If he wants a chelsea future especially with Christensen breathing down his neck, he would have to knuckle down and work, and also improve his concentration during games. I like it - Swim hard or Sink, can only be good for the team.

Good thing is that this two weeks international break gives Luiz a bit of time to press the reset button, sort out his differences with Conte and buckle down to work especially while Christensen will be away for the world cup play-offs. Intense competition for places in the team can only be a good thing.

I think Luiz knows what he ought to do. He had a great last season but this season has not been the same for him. He needs to stand before a mirror and see the man behind his poor form.

Conte made the right choices, all players playing in their actual positions. And a 3 man midfield once again was employed. And an in form Christenson replacing the out of form Luiz. We should have scored more and buried Man U. And there is still scope for improvement in all areas. But this will do nicely.
