Chelsea v Liverpool Preview

Liverpool arrive at Stamford Bridge smarting from a midweek Champions League defeat. Chelsea will be keen to get the debacle of the defeat at Wigan out of their system. Which of the two English heavyweights will be smiling the most come Sunday evening?

Vital Quotes:

Carlo Ancelotti and Rafa Benitez are no strangers to each other. Their paths have crossed on the Champions League Final stage and Ancelotti is acutely aware of the danger Liverpool present on Sunday afternoon.

In his pre-match press conference he emphasised the importance of the fixture whilst also pressing home the danger two Liverpool players in particular will present, when he remarked,

"For this big test we will need to put all of our courage and our personality on to the pitch."

"Fernando Torres is the best striker in the world along with Didier Drogba. Torres is a fantastic player, a complete striker who scores a lot of goals in many ways."

"To stop Torres and Gerrard, it`s important to work together, to read the game and control it. We have to be intelligent and work together to maintain our defensive lines and avoid easy passes to them."

Preferably, I`d prefer to see them kicked out of the game (only joking folks)!

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea enter the fixture without the suspended Petr Cech, sent off at Wigan last weekend, and also without the injured John Obi Mikel and Alex. Also unlikely to feature is the recuperating Paulo Ferreira.

However, after missing the trip to Cyprus, through suspension, Didier Drogba and Jose Bosingwa should both return as will Michael Ballack who was left back at Cobham to continue to recover from his own injury niggle instead of enjoying some Cypriot sunshine.

Here at Vital Chelsea we suspect Carlo Ancelotti will go for a starting eleven along the following lines:

Hilario, Bosingwa, Terry, Carvalho, A.Cole, Essien, Lampard, Ballack, Malouda, Drogba and Anelka.

Player to watch: Didier Drogba

After his rest in midweek, courtesy of our friends at UEFA, Didier Drogba will be raring to go. The fixture eon Sunday gives the Ivorian the perfect opportunity to prove to those watching that he is far more of a complete striker than pretty boy Torres!

Liverpool Team News:

Rafa Bentiez brings his squad to SW6 with Javier Mascherano set to return after missing the trip to Fiorentina n midweek.

Daniel Agger has featured in a reserve game but is unlikely to play whilst recent signing Aquilani is unlikely to feature.

However, the familiar faces of Gerrad, Carragher, Reina, Kuyt and Torres will all be looking for a repeat of that fluked 1-0 win last season when a deflected shot, going in off Jose Bosingwa, ended our majestic home record.

Player to watch: Fernando Torres

A Spanish goal-scoring machine who is in tremendous form. Let`s hope that our defence can deny him any opportunities to add to his tally for the season.

Match Facts & Stats

It was a moment we all dreaded happening, if there was one team out there who we didn`t want to end that historic run of Premier League home games without defeat it was Liverpool. To compound matter Liverpool also beat us up at Anfield and for the first time in ages (almost twenty years) we never took a single league point of Liverpool in a season, although matters were addressed in two epic Champions League encounters last season.

For some strange reason, our paths seemed to have continually crossed in recent years. In the last five years we`ve played Liverpool a staggering 24 times. Out of those fixtures Chelsea have won 10 Liverpool have won 7 and a further 7 have been draws.

Ref Watch:

In charge will be Martin Atkinson!

Match Prediction:

After the loss to Wigan last Saturday, Chelsea, if they harbour serious intentions of wrestling the Premier League crown from Manchester United, cannot afford a second loss in a little more than a week Another loss would be viewed with disdain by those who know the pressure would increase dramatically on Carlo Ancelotti. Thankfully, Liverpool are having a mini-crisis of their own. After trouncing Hull last weekend, 6-1, they travelled to Italy and were made to look second rate by Fiorentina. So what do us hacks here at Vital Chelsea think the outcome of the match will be this Sunday? We`ll we`re going for a Chelsea win; it might be by the narrowest of margins but its blue joy for us.

Next Fixtures:

With the squad set to dissipate around the globe for yet more international football, the Premier League is put on the back-burner until a fortnights` time when we play Aston Villa away!

Hahaha what!? This is the actual preview? You had to dance around and tease us with all the other articles before getting to this one huh? There are some ardent writers on here!
ForeverUnited
Yes, I too will be happy for another 'fluked' 1 nil win :)
Liverpool_lad
Torres verses Hilario, mmm definitely a worry. I just hope our defence gives him total protection...
TonyBlue
FU - Seems you pop over here quite a lot - not a lot going on over on your own patch?
merlin
"However, the familiar faces of Gerrad, Carragher, Reina, Kuyt and Torres will all be looking for a repeat of that fluked 1-0 win last season when a deflected shot, going in off Jose Bosingwa, ended our majestic home record." I seem to remember Alonso also hitting the post and Cech pulling off a great save from Gerrard, some fluke.
JohnDoe
Without Alonso Liverpool are only half the team they were and take Torres out they are nothing but *****
Diego_rodriguezz
funny how Alonso's importance to Liverpool went up only after he left us. When he was here all we heard was Liverpool are ***** without Torres and Gerrard, with no mention of Alonso.
JohnDoe
It's going to be tough, tense and probably decided by the odd goal. A game for the big guns (Lampard, Drogba) to step up and earn their money. I think Ballack's return is a massive boost for us in midfield and, with the flair of Joey Cole and Zhirkov to call on from the bench if needed, we've got a great chance.
daspecial1
Forgive FU. He's not used to more than an article a day on Vital United, let alone more than one about the same match, heaven forbid!
daspecial1
From Liam, Chelsea fan, via text on 81111: "Bad news for Chelsea. I've been told that Drogba will miss tomorrow's top of the table clash against Liverpool due to a groin problem."---- BBC live text. OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JT_daniel
FU, this site is not tumbleweed like the "others" you might be familiar with.
JT_daniel
No confirmation anywhere else about any Drogba problem!
merlin
Yeah, no confirmation. Hopefully, that Liam is a stupid jerk trying to wind us all up! (And I feverently hope that Liam is'nt LLB!)
JT_daniel
Bolton are in the lead with 18 minutes to go. Fantastic improvisation and team -chemistry displayed by those big lads.
Tambling
Ohh! The chickens have equalized.
Tambling
Wigan are losing to hull 2-0 this shows how BAD we were last Saturday Man U put 5 pass them we really were bad last week still gets to me
starginga
Blackpool and Arsenal put 4 past then too ************************ s
starginga
As for this game of ours tomorrow, all I am apprehensive of is at the prospect of the Merseysiders arriving at SB and throwing caution to the wind. They haven't got much to lose. And there is that added incentive of leapfrogging us courtesy of an elaborate, inspirational display. With the blues not in a particularly high strung mood currently, this could spell trouble, especially early on. I would suggest a careful, pragmatic approach early on.... Wither the opening spells of flashy incisive counters and then organise your attacks..... steady and assuring.
Tambling
That Drogba news seems bo**cks to me, JT_d. Fingers crossed, anyway!
daspecial1
merlin - You pop up quite often on Vital MU for some odd reason. But I will admit, I do venture here on a few occassions but that's cos I think this is the place to be!
ForeverUnited
FU,no you come on here to have a dig and put some sarcastic comments on,no other reason, your sad.
springy
No FU, this is the ONLY place to be for you. :-) And fellas, our own Scotty scored his FIRST EVER PREM LEAGUE GOAL!
JT_daniel
United a goal down. HOLD ON SUNDERLAND!
JT_daniel
No big deal. Those corrupt scoundrels will save their hairy arse alright. What are they there for?
Tambling
Nice to see Scotty getting off the mark for Wigan! And even nicer to see United one-down, and looking a little frustrated, at home to Sunderland!
daspecial1
Alan Wiley is United biased. That foul on Malbranque by that thug Evra was waved away! Appaling. Surely 10 minutes of "Fergietime" added on at the end of the game for Owen to win it.
JT_daniel
Atkinson is the ref?^^ And what`s the fuss about Drogba`s groin injury?
german blues brother
I think it was just a rumour, GBB.
JT_daniel
United equalise. Good goal from Burpflop.
JT_daniel
Apparently, Wiley just been spotted talking to Rooney and referring to him as 'Wazza'! And here I was thinking refs were supposed to be wholly unbiased, neutral creatures.
daspecial1
But again, United got lucky. Oh boy, now that's a recurring theme this year.
JT_daniel
Really das? Now I'm even more convinced Wiley will give them whatever minutes it takes if they have'nt won the game before 90 min. "Fergietime", it's called.
JT_daniel
Sunderland lead again! 30 minutes to go Bruce, tell them to defend!
JT_daniel
Wiley's a ****.
JT_daniel
Burpflop trips over, Wiley gives a freekick. The Sunderland player gets irritated and kicks the ball 2 feet away, 2 FEET. And he gets a yellow! And now yellow for Burpflop's diving!
JT_daniel
We've got to document all this and send it to the FA. Anyway, come on Sunderland, just 12 min to go!
JT_daniel
Come on Black Cats - hold out!
merlin
Old United boy Richardson sent off - helping his old mates is he?
merlin
Trust Wiley to give a dodgy red. Now expect Untied to win it in the 98th and the 102nd minute, after Sunderland have been denied a stonewall penalty in the 90th minute (Disclaimer-Idea taken from a 606 post).
JT_daniel
3 mins + 15 mins of stoppage time to go!"
merlin
Any last minute bets on how much stoppage time there will be? My bet is 15 minutes.
JT_daniel
fingers crossed JT, fingers crossed!
merlin
Oh, you're on 15 too eh merlin? Cheers, we'll win.
JT_daniel
the board will say UUS!
merlin
UNTIL UNITED SCORE
merlin
And it's 4!!!!! But "Fergietime" is the extra 11 minutes.
JT_daniel
Haha, I thought that was an accepted rule at OT, in front of Lord Fergie!
JT_daniel
IS THAT 4 MINS OR 4 HOURS?
merlin
Oops! 2-2
blueogre
COME ON SUNDERLAND, COME ON!
merlin
UUS it is! Freaks. They are so lucky!
JT_daniel
Would you ADAM and EVE it!
merlin
Oh no, now they'll win it, you'll see. The UUS rule will apply!
JT_daniel
that sort of luck wins Premier League titles!
merlin
Few more seconds to see how biased the ref is.
JT_daniel
ANTON FERDINAND deflection - one for you Rio!
merlin
my elder bruv I should have added!
merlin
And he's not! Apparently, Steve Bruce paid Wiley 10 quid more to DO his job.
JT_daniel
I guess I'd have taken 2-2 before kick off though if I were honest!
merlin
lol of course the ref makes sunderland 10 men so united could equalize.... pathetic
sirhCRocks
Ok, 2 poits dropped by united, we should pick it up. Btw, Sunderland`s midfield and ball possession game was really good in the first half.
german blues brother
I guess it was battle of noses BENT (Bruce) and RED (Fergie)!
merlin
Aaah, a brother link! Maybe It was all actually fixed... over breakfast today!
JT_daniel
@sirhCRocks, that Sunderland player was sooooooooo stupid, I dont have words left to describe it:D You just dont do that and the ref booked a player for this offence before but he didnt get it.
german blues brother
Yeah, but the way the game was going, a loss should've been the fair result.. Still, not complaining. It's not often that United drop points at OT to a non Big 4 team.
JT_daniel
Richardson was always one with a hot head. He lost Sunderland 2 points today! And I'll bet it's all a conspiracy.. LOL!
JT_daniel
As for the red card, tell me this- Rooney kicking at Richardson viciously did'nt even merit him a yellow card. Richardson at the end of a questionable foul for holding off Valencia, kicks the ball a few feet away, gets a yellow card! Now as a moral soul, tell me which is more harmful for the game ang the opposition player? Surley a ticking off will suffice? No! At OT, in front of Fergie, the ref;'s have to turn red.
JT_daniel
I agree with merlin - I'd have taken a draw before this one. Two United dropped points at Old Trafford is very rare, so we should just be grateful for that. Now we've got a chance to go back to the top of the league properly tomorrow afternoon - no greater incentive, is there?
daspecial1
phew, 2 pts dropped by man u. should have been 3 but it's still a lot. justice et fait for the citeh overtime. what happened? bank holiday in britain? sir alex couldn't but the extra half an hour?
johnny come lately
but = buy
johnny come lately
of course the sunderland result becomes good only if we encash tomorrow. it's like a promissory note with a deadline. go the blues, tomorrow's got to be the most precious 3 points we can ever claim.
johnny come lately
Foster is shockingly bad.
Saf 91
Future England No.1? Goes to show the serious lack of potential we have in this country coming through, doesn't it?
daspecial1
Interestingly, Liverpool have conceded 9 out of 10 goals this season from set pieces - so our deliveries from free kicks had better be good tomorrow. Which means Frank is not allowed to take any!
Saf 91
Mind you, we have the second-highest percentage of goal conceded fom set pieces, after Poo....
Saf 91
2-0. Drogba and Lamps.
djdutts
We seldom look threatening on set pieces.
londonfc
Let Malouda take the corners. And Drogba or Ballack with the freekicks. Lampard should concentrate on scoring from open play,
JT_daniel
6-1 chelsea
starginga
Londonfc keep faith. Maybe iva will play and terrorise their defence? :) and starginga you'r jinxing it mate!
JT_daniel
5-0 Chelsea. though i'll settle with a fluky 1-0 win.
carefreeblue
I'll settle for a win! Be it 11-10 or 1-0! :-)
JT_daniel
2-1....... torres scores in the first half. drogba scores early second half and ballack for the winner 10 mins from time!!! :)
