Signed by Jose Mourinho in July 2006, Hilario was signed as a back-up by Mourinho for the first choice pairing of Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini.

He unexpectedly broke into the first team after Cech and Cudicini both suffered head injuries in that infamous fixture against Reading in October 2006. His debut came against Barcelona, of all teams, in a thrilling 1-0 win where his every touch was applauded by the Matthew Harding faithful.

During that run in the side he saved a penalty away at Sheffield United to further enhance his keeping abilities. He had a place on the bench in the Carling Cup Final against Arsenal, in 2007.

Despite making occasional appearances the follwoing season, Hilario sprung to promienence when Cudicini decided a move to Spurs would be in his interests. Now entrenched as Petr Cech's deputy, Hilario, when called upon, has almost always delivered the goods and in a recent fixture (2009/2010) against Liverpool, he picked up the man-of-the-match accolade for a string of fine saves.

Further appearances, in 2010, came due to a calf injury Cech picked up and saw Hilario come on during the Champions League confrontation with Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan.
